With magnificent white, sandy beaches and blue waters, the Dominican Republic is a sight to behold. When you add to the mix vibrant green fields as well as massive mountain ranges, this destination promises to be an adventure that one can’t do without. With the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement, this tropical island has always been a popular holiday spot to enjoy and explore! From the beaches of Puerto Plata to the magnificent ancient architecture of Santo Domingo, every turn will reveal a new wonder that will leave you lost for words!
Start your journey in Santo Domingo. Comb through the expanses of the Zona Colonial, which is the beating heart of Santo Domingo. With a full square mile of beautiful streets and squares, you can find some of the oldest colonial buildings in this region. Take a long walk along the Calle del las Damas before stopping at any of the many rows of shops, restaurants and cafes, many of which are placed in colonial-era buildings! Other cities like La Romana, Los Alcarrizos and San Cristobal are also worth including in your itinerary.
The Dominican Republic is not just known for its beautiful cities, though. Travel to the Costa del Coco and lose yourself in this magnificent “Coconut Coast”. With reef-protected white beaches and calm waters, this is definitely a place that can serve as a highlight to your trip. Spend the day soaking in the endless vistas of sea, sand and coconut trees before retiring to any of the small hotels and villas that dot the coastline! Other parts of this destination that are worth visiting include Bavaro, the Catalina Islands, Casa de Campo as well as the beautiful Los Haitises.
The landscape of the Dominican Republic is not the only part of the experience that is steeped in history. The cuisine of this clearly exhibits a combination of Spanish, the indigenous and African influences. Start your day with a meal consisting of Casabe, Guanimos and Guanime. Keep some place for a mid-day meal of Arroz con leche and Crème Caramel. Dine in the late evening on a generous portion of Mangu, some Asopao, Yanikeke and Mofongo. Other famous Dominican dishes include Chambre, Mondongo and a healthy stew called Sancocho!
Along with an adventurous cuisine, the Dominican Republic also offers a range of adventure sports to enjoy. Go kite surfing at Cabarete or mountain biking, horseback riding and water rafting from the mountain retreats of Jarabacoa. Alternatively, you can stick to the coastline and book a catamaran cruise or a speedboat from Punta Cana. You can even sign up for a dune buggy ride or a zip lining adventure!
