Brunei may seem like a stopover pause onto your next destination, but there is more to it than meets the eye. Locally known as the pleasant darussalam, Brunei has a lot to offer especially with its lush green rainforests. Although governed by a strict religious and socially conscious rule, you won’t find it hard to lose yourself in this charming sultanate.
Begin your journey at Kuala Belait, which is one of the few suburban areas along with an excellent beach for adventure activities here. Next, travel to Seria, which is known to be the oil capital of the country. Travel onwards to Jalan Labi, through its magnificent forested areas, rustic longhouses and the majestic waterfall that is located here. Next, travel onwards to Sukang, which is best known for its flourishing flora and fauna which has attracted visitors from all around the world. Tutong is your next destination. Known for its pristine white sands and its pitcher plans, nature lovers can make the most of their stay here. Next, travel to Bandar Seri Begawan, which is the capital city of the country and home to several beautiful mosques, water villages and historic museums. Ride onwards towards Muara which contains the country’s lone deep water port. It has rapidly developed from a rustic fisherman village to one of the most economically developed regions. Finally, cross over to Bangar which makes for a delightful stay especially when you travel over the connecting water body towards more lush rainforests and longhouses.
Although Brunei is not a popular destination for travel, it has several mesmerizing and majestic attractions that make for a wonderful visit. Visit the majestic Sultan Omar Ali Saufuddin Mosque which blends the Mughal architecture and various Italian styles. Explore the majestic palace of Istana Nurul Iman which is also the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei and selected associates. It makes a picturesque setting against the setting of the sprawling hills and the banks of the river Brunei. Take walk down the country’s history in the national Brunei Museum. No trip can be completed without a family outing, which is especially exciting at the Jerudong Park.
Since the locals take great delight in their meals, you can relish a delightful gastronome experience here. Due to its neighboring influences you will find a lot of different flavors and tastes on the local dishes. Do try the traditional nasi katok, but be warned, it is extremely spicy. You can also try the ambuyat which is found only in Burnei. A few common cuisines that are a must try are the beef rendang, nasi lemak and puteri nanas. Although alcohol is not consumed here, you can take great delight in coconut milk, fruit juices, tea and coffee here.
Although there is not much exciting activities to do here, there are plenty of activities that will leave you with a delightful adrenaline rush or a lifetime experience. You can take any of the several tours to the various rainforest or natural reserves here. You can even go swimming and scuba diving in the coastal areas. There are many dive sites that range from old wrecks to natural wonders that can satisfy your deep sea experience.
