Winter trips for early 2013

We know the long, dark nights and frosty weather can leave folk feeling a bit down and in need of some cheer. So in amongst all the bustle that comes with the season, why not treat yourself and organise an early holiday to start 2013 off with some fun!

There are plenty of destinations worldwide that liven up the winter months with spectacles and fantastic activities that will be sure to inject some colour and adventure into the beginning of the year.

The Flexicover Team have put together some fantastic destination ideas that could be right up your street. Check these out and see if you can make a resolution to enjoy yourself in 2013!

Harbin Ice Festival, China

Harbin in north-eastern China and close to the Siberian border makes the most of its freezing winters to host the world famous International Ice and Snow sculpture festival each year. It kicks off on 5th January 2013 and lasts for a month with a spectacular exhibition of sculptures made from snow and ice, running a gamut of designs from palaces and dragons to dinosaurs, ships and spacecraft. Spend the day witnessing the magicians at work as they work on their newest creations. And touring the site in the evening gifts you with the sight of the sculptures lit by coloured lights in a glittering display of ice sculpting genius!

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

Located in south-western Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is a fantastic place to experience game viewing and birding as well as the incredible landscape. Offering a wilder environment off the beaten path, you can enjoy a unique safari here as you cross paths with fauna of all kinds such as elephants, kudu, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. The Great Ruaha River forms the eastern border and is a lifeline for the park’s mammals, plus the Eastern Rift Valley also crosses the park. Walking tours or open-topped four-wheel drive vehicle safaris are available to ensure an awesome time is had! The best time to visit is between January and April.

Toronto, Canada

Whilst temperatures do go below freezing, that doesn’t stop the Canadians from having fun! The provincial capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada is a fantastic place to visit in winter. With 10 years of success, Toronto’s favourite premier dining event, the ‘Winterlicious’ Food Festival is back on between January 25th and February 7th featuring unique experiences and diverse cuisines. With over 100 participating restaurants, be sure to book early and experience 3-course culinary creations at amazing prices. Work up an appetite whilst you experience the excitement of ice skating at the Natrel Rink at Harbourfront or outside the city hall in Nathan Phillips Square.

Despite being cold, winter is a great time to visit Germany and in particular the capital, Berlin. Whilst December is busy with thousands of visitors coming from all over the world to experience the festive markets, in the early part of the year you can take advantage of lower rates and less tourists. If you happen to be in Berlin between the 20th and 29th of January, then do visit International Green Week, the largest food related trade fair in the world with over 1200 international exhibitors! And February hosts the Berlinale, the capital’s international film festival with red carpet premiers, celebrities and cinematic artwork making it a huge affair and cementing the city’s place as a nexus for art and culture!

Whether you ski or not, Switzerland makes a fabulous winter break. St. Moritz is a great resort in the Engadine valley and is one of the oldest winter holiday destinations in the world. Located over 1,800 metres above sea level, it’s an elegant resort and its no surprise that two Winter Olympic Games (in 1928 and again in 1948) were held here. Top class hotels and restaurants, a lakeside landscape, world-class skiing, horse racing on the frozen lake and much more make for an exciting and adventurous winter trip away!

If you are lucky enough to jet off for some winter fun, you may need a helping hand from Flexicover Direct, the travel insurance specialists, committed to providing the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
