Where’s still hot in October
As much as we pine for the days of lingering sun, al fresco lunches and warm evenings, there’s no denying that the colder months are indeed coming. But that just gets our holiday booking fingers twitchy – for when better to take a break than when there’s one last hurrah available before the winter season sets in?
The good news about travelling in October is that there are destinations both near and far that are still a balmy temperature – and, unless it’s half term, the prices are reasonable too.
The Flexicover team has picked out its five favourite places to enjoy a last burst of heat before the shorts and flip-flops retire for another year - unless there’s a winter break in the works…
A favourite destination for summer, the unmistakable white and blue cliffs of Santorini are even better to visit in October. The island is free of the hectic throng of tourists, yet Mediterranean waters are still warm from the summer heat and on average, temperatures are a pleasing 22C. As it’s a volcanic island, the sand is greyish rather than golden-brown, but just as enjoyable for a game of beach volleyball or for lounging on with a book. The lasting warm weather means that the famous sunset can still be enjoyed outside; grab a table at one of the restaurants on the caldera to enjoy the spectacular views.
Direct flights to the coastal town of Essaouira launched in 2015 but it’s still pretty much overlooked as an excellent destination for winter sun. In October, the temperature is around 21C and more importantly it doesn’t dip in the evening. The 18th century walled medina is the main attraction here; the bustling stalls are a delight and full of atmosphere. Its beaches are often too windy for swimming, but whiling away time at its busy port and taking in the city walls (which have been featured in Game of Thrones) is a wonderful way to spend a day. Nature-lovers can also head inland to witness the Agran tree-climbing goats, which scale the trees in search of food!
For all the usual pleasures of a summer holiday, just without the crowds and price tag, Cyprus is a tempting destination. The third largest island in the Med soars to 25C in the day in October – perfect for elongating the summer. The numerous towns can reflect the type of holiday needed; party-goers will enjoy the clubbing hotspot Ayia Napa, while beach-lovers can stay at the plentiful resort hotels in Protaras or Paphos. To throw some culture into the mix, Cyprus has plenty of sites and ruins to explore, like the beautiful Tomb of Kings, Limassol Castle and Kykkos Monastery.
San Diego, USA
Nicknamed ‘America’s Finest City’, San Diego is known for its year-round great weather and pristine beaches. An October visit will still see temperatures upwards of 20C and there are a huge variety of activities to pack in. So along with enjoying time at the beach, some items for the itinerary include a trip to the famous San Diego Zoo, enjoying a fun day out at SeaWorld and partaking in a few outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, volleyball and cycling.
Abu Dhabi, UAE
If it’s not summer unless it’s oven-hot outside, Abu Dhabi is a destination to consider. Now a rival to its more-visited neighbour of Dubai, Abu Dhabi has set out to cater to guests in need of a glamorous and luxurious break. If visitors can bear to be away from the crystal-clear beaches, they can window shop at the designer parades, take a desert safari in a 4x4 or indulge in the many lavish restaurants at their disposal. However much you end up spending, you’ll feel like a million dollars.
