Water parks of the world
As the weather warms up, we're getting antsy to ditch the winter wardrobe and hop into our swimwear instead - and there's no better excuse than taking a trip to a water park. Perfect for families and adults indulging their playful side, resorts around the world offer a fantastical selection, with the breadth on offer highlighting their continued popularity.
Whether it’s gigantic indoor spaces for weather-free fun, top-rated wave pools for all ages or adrenalin-fuelled aquatic adventures, there's a water park to match.
So grab the sun cream, lilo and towels - here are the Flexicover team's favourite five destinations where you can really splash out.
Costa Caribe Aquatic Park, Tarragona, Spain
Daredevils who hanker for thrills and spills should make a beeline for the Costa Caribe Aquatic Park. It hosts the highest freefall slide in Europe: the fearsome King Khajuna. Prepare to leave your stomach at the top of the 31-metre drop, as you plummet down the slide before making a splash in one of its many pools. After that adrenalin-rush, enjoy other Caribbean-themed attractions in this luscious tropical paradise, from the wave pool of the Bermuda Triangle to the obstacle ride of El Rio Loco. An aspect which may seal the deal is that it's not the only reason to drive the one hour from Barcelona: also, it's attached to the gigantic theme park PortAventura, which itself takes a couple of days to explore.
Fasouri Waterpark, Paphos, Cyprus
There's over 100,000 square metres of aquatic fun to bathe in at this Polynesia-themed park. The space is used wisely; for the aqua-adventure seeker, daring rides include a near-vertical slide and fearsome black hole slide to tease the senses. But younger patrons aren't left out - as well as special activity areas, there's a play area themed on an orange juice factory. Those in need of R'n'R can while away the day with a massage or a fish spa, or enjoy some 'me time' on one of 3,000 sun loungers in the park, with complimentary suntan lotion to bask in the sun safely. Outside of the waterpark, this popular destination has historical, cultural and coastal attractions for a well-rounded holiday.
Tropical Islands, Berlin, Germany
As if Berlin wasn't already fascinating enough, with so much modern history to take in from the artsy warehouses of the Kreuzberg district to the remaining parts of the infamous wall, about an hour south lies yet another reason to visit. The Tropical Islands is the world's biggest indoor water park, with a dome ceiling painted to imitate the sky - just to add to the surreal surrounds. Built in 2004, the former airship hangar now houses four areas to explore, all with a totally tropical feel. A consistent 26oC in temperature, it's a perfect solution for a quick dip whatever the weather.
Area 47, Ötztal, Austria
If you thought heart-pumping activities in the Tyrol began and ended with skiing, you've yet to experience Area 47. It's a water park, but not as we know it. Primarily for adept swimmers and adults, Area 47's water area is where you throw yourself off things and dive into other things - if you're brave enough. The most adventurous should try the Cannonball: where a strong jet of water propels you into the air before the lake cushions your fall. There's also an off-road and climbing area for drier activities, but it’s the water features that are the real draw here.
Noah's Ark Water Park, Wisconsin, USA
As well as being the best named (in our opinion) of our featured water parks, Noah's Ark is also the biggest. We already know that Americans don't do things by halves and that's proved in this case with 70 acres of watery paradise just waiting to be enjoyed. With over 51 slides to experience, there's also a surf simulator, two wave pools, a dive-in theatre and raft adventures. It's an ideal detour if you're in Chicago, which is three hours away, but probably best to plan an overnight stay to give yourself enough time to pack it all in.
So wherever you plan to head to this year it’s good to know that Flexicover Travel Insurance is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
