Vive La France!

September is one of the best times to visit France or its associated city-state, Monaco. With plenty of sunshine and temperatures often up to 24°C, long days and less tourist hustle and bustle, you get all the benefits and often cheaper too!

The spectrum of French breaks is varied; go to cities such as Paris or Lyon, on beach breaks in La Rochelle or Marseille, combine city and beach breaks in Monaco or simple ‘go-as-you-please’ motoring holidays in Brittany.

Stay in a traditional, grand, modern or minimalist hotel, pension, gîte or château - France has them all.

The Flexicover Team recommends the following choices.

The citybreak - Lyon

As the third largest city in France, Lyon has a dynamic culture and a sophisticated air about it. This precious, old town with green parks and riverside paths is a great place to spend a few days. Consider buying a ‘Lyon City Card’ on arrival giving you access to more than 40 services and attractions such as museums, guided tours and even some lively night shows. With an abundance of great, affordable restaurants serving rustic, traditional food, the Lyon Gastronomy Festival on the 22nd September will also be a treat second to none!

For a terrific suntan - La Rochelle

The ancient city of La Rochelle is one of France’s prettiest coastal towns with exceptional natural and architectural buildings. It prides itself on eco-friendly forms of transport such as self-service bicycles, electric shuttles, sea buses and electric cars. Beautifully nestled on the Atlantic seafront, La Rochelle has four ports, making it one of France’s most important harbours. Boasting a quaint quayside full of small and large boats, this town holds a distinct vibrancy of life with bustling cafés, bars and irresistible seafood restaurants. Never a wasted minute, the whole family will have the time of their lives here – and a nice suntan is a bonus!

The majestique - Saumur, Western Loire

You will be spellbound by the history and charm of the Loire Valley and the elegance of this city, known for the wine-producing areas around it and for being a centre of equestrian excellence. The historical heart of the city offers many exquisite shops and restaurants and make sure to visit the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud and the National School of Equestrianism (École Nationale d'Équitation) with its elite riding team, the Cadre Noir. Stay at Château de Verrières, a beautiful, family-sized château built in 1890 and set in four acres of parkland in the centre of the old town. This castle has retained its original elegance and has ten bedrooms that are wonderfully decorated - perfect for a calm and restful stay.

Beach city - Monaco

The tiny country of Monaco on the French Riviera is an ideal getaway for anyone looking to enjoy the finer side of Europe. With its ultra-luxury hotels and restaurants, celebrity spotting and jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, there is something for everyone here. A visit to the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino where a number of James Bond movies have been filmed is a must! Even if you choose not to throw the dice, just walking through this grand casino to admire the stunning decor is a treat in itself. Across the road, visit the exclusive Hotel des Paris where you can stop for a drink or have dinner in its Michelin 3-star restaurant. You could also tour the Monegasque royal palace or hike up the hills overlooking the marina and marvel at the opulent yachts docked there!

French cuisine

Whilst every region offers its own delicacies, there are a few things that you absolutely must try! From its baking in the form of croissants, crepes, patisseries and baguettes, to some of the finest wines and cheeses, how can you resist one of the best reasons for visiting France?
