Travel Insurance Tips!

Whilst buying travel insurance has become easier of late, it is important to fully consider your party's circumstances to help choose the right policy.

Here are some points to consider before buying:

1. Medical conditions
If you or anyone in your party has an existing medical condition, it is advisable to get a quote for travel insurance before booking your trip.

2. Buy it early
Arrange your travel insurance as soon as your trip is booked - this will immediately protect you in the unlikely event that you have to cancel.

3. Policy type
Planning more than one trip a year? An annual multi trip policy will almost certainly be more cost effective. Annual European policies for couples under 50 years, cost as little as £21 per person. If you later decide to travel outside of Europe, a worldwide extension can be arranged for an additional cost. Also, do ensure that your family policy includes independent travel, giving the freedom for all insured passengers to travel separately from one another.

4. Full cover
Ensure your cover is for the full duration of your trip so that you are covered from the moment your journey is booked until you return home. Watch out if you land early in the morning - you may need an extra day's cover!

5. Excess
Be aware of the excess payable on each of the benefits of your policy before you buy. Excess levels will vary so it is important that you consider this when choosing your policy.

6. Policy features
Covers vary from one policy to another, as does the price. Be sure to check all the features and benefits to ensure you have the cover you need. If you are likely to carry any business equipment, (e.g. computer or communication devices) ensure that your personal baggage covers you automatically for these items.

7. Sporting & Adventurous activities
Planning to ski, snowboard, ice skate, bungee jump or participate in any such activities? Make sure your policy covers all the activities you will be participating in.

8. Policy documents
Policy documents will tell you what you are covered for and who you should contact in the event of a problem abroad. Store the emergency assistance telephone number together with your policy number in your mobile phone - handy for an emergency. Ensure you pack the insurance certificate and policy wording with you.
