The country of Panama, located on the isthmus between North America and South America is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination. And with good reason! Being a small country, Panama travel is easy, letting you visit both the North Pacific and the North Atlantic Oceans, rainforests, mountains, vibrant cities and explore a rich culture influenced by both the continents it connects. The most favoured destination though, is the capital of Panama City. Here you can find a lovely contrast of its Spanish colonial past meshed with modern architecture and way of life.
If you find yourself in Panama City when you travel to Panama, here are some things you simply must do during your Panama holidays:
Visit the Panama Canal:
The canal that cuts through Panama to join the North Pacific Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea is one of the main attractions in the city and there are a number of ways you can experience this marvellous achievement of mankind. Visit one of the three locks on the canal, especially the Miraflores Lock, which also has a museum and a restaurant with a great view of the canal or even take one of the Panama Canal cruises, and cross the canal either partially, which takes about four hours or completely, which takes about eight hours.
Explore Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo:
Panama Viejo and Casco Viejo are some of the most interesting places to visit in Panama.
Panama Viejo was the very first city founded by the Spanish on the Pacific and became an important centre of trade. This, the original Panama City, lies in ruins due to a disastrous siege led by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. Today, you can explore the ruins containing stone archways and remnants of houses, convents and churches. The seaside landscape in Panama Viejo is extremely scenic and the museum located here will have you fascinated with its rich collection for hours during your Panama tours.
After the destruction of Panama Viejo, the Spanish built a city on the opposite side of the bay, called Casco Viejo, or Casco Antiguo. Today it is a UNESCO protected site, and one of the best places to visit in Panama where you can see amazing examples of architecture from Spanish colonial to French, Caribbean and Art Deco. It’s also one of the city’s most important art centres and hosts jazz, dance and art festivals, events and shows. Definitely a must-visit to get a taste of Panama’s wonderful diversity.
Trek a nature trail:
A mere fifteen minutes from the buzzing Panama City lies the Metropolitan National Park, that boasts of a number of trails that you can take. These aren’t very tough, amounting to no more than 8 kilometres, but they definitely give you a chance to lose yourself to the bliss of the rainforest and sight some wonderful animals, reptiles, birds and plants. Right at the top of the trail, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city as well as the Panama Canal. It’s rated as one of the top things to do in Panama, and is not to be missed.
