The World's Cleanest Cities

Are you fond of some cities for their atmosphere, vibrancy, shopping, culture, history and architecture but are turned off them because of pollution, waste, graffiti and litter? Do you despair?

Then here is Flexicover's pick of cities you may love to visit!

Calgary and Ottawa, Canada:

Both have been commended for their excellent transportation systems and recycling processes. Ottawa was also singled out for the excellent quality of its water in 2009, with many other Canadian cities also amongst the cleanest. Enjoy exploring them and feel that real breath of fresh air!

Oslo, Norway and Helsinki, Finland:

Both these Scandinavian cities are renowned for their success in reducing emissions and generally being greener than others, generating significant improvements in air quality. Waste disposal systems have also been highly commended with many homes now connected to special underground pipes disposing of domestic waste. Explore these vibrant cities and see the sparkle for yourself!

Honolulu, USA:

Honolulu, the southernmost US city in the tropical state of Hawaii, is noted for its high domestic water quality, filtered through volcanic rock rich in minerals and free from any chlorine taste. It also has an excellent public transport system, so be sure to hop on that bus and explore this tropical city in all its glory.

Minneapolis, USA:

Minneapolis, the city of lakes and capital of the Midwestern state of Minnesota, is considered to be one of the most environmentally-friendly cities in the world. It is renowned for its numerous bicycle paths as well as its light rail and bus systems. Try a horse-drawn carriage in the downtown area or take a trip to Lake Harriet. Visit the Mall of America, the world’s second largest and most frequented shopping centre – it even has a theme park in the middle of it!

Singapore, Southeast Asia:

The city-state of Singapore, the ‘Lion City’, probably has the most regulations in the region and will levy instant fines for jaywalking, chewing gum, littering, not flushing the loo or eating on the train! These city ordinances contribute to making it unbelievably clean – there won’t even be any cigarette butts on the streets! Enjoy exploring Singapore by travelling on their air-conditioned Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) railway system.

Zurich, Switzerland:

And last, but not least, Zurich, Switzerland's largest city with a highly respected global presence. Zurich, with its world famous secretive bankers having prompted Harold Wilson to coin the phrase, “The gnomes of Zurich”, is the cultural capital of German-speaking Switzerland and has been named the city with the best quality of life on earth.
