Sheena's take on the Maldives

Sheena Simaria's take on the Maldives

Published: December 2016

I recently went to the Maldives with my family for a week’s holiday. My husband and I were very much in need of some sun, sea and relaxation and that is exactly what we got!

We were a little apprehensive at first as it was an 11 hour flight with our 16 month old, fun-loving but very active twin babies but they slept most of the way which was a big plus! We stayed at the gorgeous Lux South Ari Atoll resort on the island of Dhidhoofinolhu which was the ideal place to escape and picture perfect just as the photos we had seen.

We had a wonderful beach villa with a pool on the sunset side of the island which suited our family needs perfectly. We spent 7 lazy days reading, swimming and watching the sunset on the beach. Our girls loved being in the water too!

  • The exceptional service by every single staff member
  • The delicious food at all 7 eateries and the wonderful cocktails at East Bar
  • Café lux – the coffee shop serving the best coffee (and frappes!) all day and delicious cakes!
  • Massages in an over water villa in the Spa (pick the hut with the glass bottom!)

Would we return? We always say no, we wouldn’t go to the same place twice as there is so much to see and experience around the world, but honestly, the truth is, we had the most incredible time at the Lux and would return in a heartbeat!! Now to start saving!

Tips – travelling with babies!

  • Lots of spare changes of clothes for baby and you!
  • Lots of small toys to keep them entertained (don’t pull them all out at once – stagger them!)
  • A musical toy like baby Einstein (we put this in their bassinet on low volume to help with sleep time)
  • Different snacks and lots of water/milk to keep them hydrated
  • Try and give them some milk for take-off and landing to help with their ears
  • Stick to your normal routine and timings as much as possible
  • Take them for a walk on the plane so they familiarise themselves with their surroundings
  • Patience
