Outdoor adventure in New Zealand

Halloween destinations

Published: 22 January 2015

Last year, New Zealand was adjudged the ‘World’s Best Country to Visit’ by more than 90,000 people in the Telegraph Travel Awards. With its breath-taking landscape, cheerful and friendly people, geological wanders and fabulous fauna these are strong contributors to this title. It is the Extreme-Sports Capital of the Southern Hemisphere that keeps travellers and thrill-seekers alike, visiting New Zealand time and time again.

There are so many things to do on this island and you can make family adventure holidays truly memorable. New Zealand is full of beautiful hikes or “Great Walks” such as the Milford Track. You can take mesmerising helicopter rides over the Franz Josef Glacier and Milford Sound too, a once in a lifetime experience. Cruises on the Milford Sound are exceptionally scenic and often include visits to underwater observatories to view marine life and beautiful corals. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing hiking trail is also very popular and the track takes you through some stunning landscapes that still have volcanic activity.

They say, in New Zealand, the sea is never too far away. And with beaches stretching for several miles, the thrill of water sports is elevated to an entirely new level. Try surfing in Raglan’s Manu Bay which is known to have one of the longest breaks in the world. You can actually ride a wave for a full 2 kilometres before reaching the shore. Or, you can really pump up the adrenaline and try bungee-jumping off sheer cliffs in South Island. Or if you happen to visit in their winter, Queenstown is the place to be for some incredible skiing!

In the air, sea or on land – whichever way you look at New Zealand, there is an outdoor adventure just waiting to be had. Besides hiking, bungee-jumping, skiing and helicopter rides, you can fill your New Zealand adventure holidays with paragliding and skydiving, scuba diving, parasailing, mountain biking and free diving. Whichever activity you try, remember to buy your New Zealand travel insurance before you head off and check which activities are covered in your policy.

And if thrilling activities aren’t your thing, try camping out in the open under the stars, surrounded by some of the most picturesque sights in the world; simply magical!
