New Year travel destinations

Happy New Year to you! It’s that time of year, now that Christmas is over, where we slowly begin to get back to our routine and working to keep our New Year's resolutions.

During the break, most of us would have given some thought to booking a holiday. Make 2014 a year to venture somewhere special or maybe finally book that trip that you’ve been always promising yourself! There are some great places to explore, near and far, all bursting with their own charms. If your goal is to try somewhere different, see if one of our selection proves irresistable for you!

The Flexicover Team pick out some great travel destinations for 2014.

Riga, Latvia

Riga, capital of Latvia, would be a wonderful option for a travel destination, particularly as it has been designated as a European Capital of Culture for 2014. Whilst it’s already a great place for events, it will now become a cultural epicentre! With special events taking place all year round, it’ll be fantastic to visit and makes for a great city break as the Rigans aren’t frightened to wear their history on their sleeves, celebrating it boldly! Whether you explore the city on a small ship along the river, visit the Art Nouveau museum, the central market or the Spikeri creative quarter which hosts the concert hall, lots of restaurants and much more, you are sure to have a great long weekend. Wander through Riga’s old town, enjoy great views from St Peter’s Church tower and take in this vibrant world!

Umeå, Sweden

Umeå is the second city chosen as a European Capital of Culture for 2014, sending this institution further north than it ever has been! This large and bustling university town in northern Sweden is a leader in research and education. With a fine balance of cultural activities, places for entertainment and the countryside, it is an ideal place for a long weekend. If you enjoy modern art, visit the Umedalen Sculpture, a permanent sculptural exhibition whilst taking a stroll in the park. The Museum of the Image (Bildmuseet) is also a fun place to visit, showcasing images and visual arts and exhibiting both national and international contemporary art. For good measure it has free entry!

Fortaleza, Brazil

Located in north-eastern Brazil, Fortaleza is the state capital of Ceará and the fifth largest city in Brazil. It’s quickly becoming even more popular and tourists, both internally and the world over, are visiting in impressive numbers! It’s the city for beaches and parties, as well as having a great culinary tradition and rich examples of Brazilian culture. Wander around Centro, the oldest part of the town and explore the busy streets of small shops. Visit one of the many beaches from Morro Branco and Jericoacoara to Porto das Dunas and do try to fit in the cachaca museum too and then, later, party the night away! If you are lucky enough to be heading to Brazil for the World Cup, try and fit Fortaleza into your plans to make it a wholly memorable trip!

Corralejo, Spain

This fabulous town and resort on the northern tip of Fuerteventura (one of the Canary Islands), once just a small fishing village, has grown into a lively metropolis whilst retaining much of its original charm. It’s a great place for relaxing and taking in some sunshine on the white sandy beaches with bars and restaurants running along the main street. It makes a lovely destination for a whole range of age groups and with plenty to do from water sports to glass-bottom boat trips, from island tours to ferry trips to the near-by island of Lanzarote. Enjoy enticing seafood, quaint Spanish bars and the great white sand dunes to the south of the town, protected as a nature park. Bliss!

Ranthambore National Park, India

Situated in Rajasthan, this is one of the largest and most renowned national parks in northern India. Previously famous for being the hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, this national park is one of the best locations to see tigers in their natural habitat. Home also to leopards, sloth bears, hyenas and wild boars, Ranthambore is a perfect location for nature and wildlife lovers. Wake up early for a morning safari, as that’s the best time to spot the predators. Stay a few days or even a week, it’s an incredible place. Just don’t forget your camera on this one!

Wherever you are lucky enough to travel in 2014, we at Flexicover are committed to providing you the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
