Last minute Christmas tips

“Christmas time! That man must be a misanthrope indeed, in whose breast something like a jovial feeling is not roused - in whose mind some pleasant associations are not awakened - by the recurrence of Christmas” - Sketches by Boz, Charles Dickens

Whilst that statement is a bit of sweeping generalisation, most of us can probably appreciate the sentiment that it is trying to evoke. This is a time to enjoy the festivities with your loved ones and partake in all the activities that go to making a merry, Christmas household.

However, it can also be a stressful time for many, for all the preparations that go into making it a grand occasion. But with a bit of planning and forethought, it doesn’t have to be a chore. The Flexicover Team looks at some things to think about, ahead of Christmas Day.

Make a list

You may even want to check it twice! Staying organised is the key to the most successful gatherings. There are always things you do early and get them out of the way - buying presents, organising guest lists, stocking up on party foods. Planning a timetable as you countdown to the big day can also help and if you split the tasks with helpful folk, then each one is more invested to making sure things go swimmingly. Together you make sure that a great team pulls as one and events are enjoyed by everyone!

Take an evening for you

From Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, your home may be filled with family and that manic feeling of rushing around trying to get everything perfect. In the run up to these days, if you can take an evening out or spare a few hours to spend on yourself, grab that opportunity! A winter walk in the local woods, a film at the cinema, ice skating or a comforting take-away - all of these can help you unwind ahead of a busy period and create an island of calm in the midst of a sea of hustle and bustle.

Try something new

If you’re the one to host the Christmas festivities every time, perhaps think about trying something new this year. Whether it’s a different style of decorating the home, a different colour scheme for the Christmas dinner crockery or some new recipes for the festive table, you’ll feel great and the family is sure to love it. If you’ve been saving something for a special occasion, now is the time to try it. Don’t let Christmas be the same old affair time after time; often a little change can do a lot of good!

Make merry memories on Christmas Day

At this busy time we sometimes forget that great joy often comes out of organising small, informal things. Laugh with the family, spend time with friends, savour each moment, maybe take a few photos along the way. These memories will mature as the years roll on and help bring nuance to future years. Share the chores with festive music in the background and enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple amongst the excitement of unwrapping presents!

Reflect and relax

These days you’ll probably find that the Christmas holidays run straight into the New Year and many people can find themselves not knowing quite what day of the week it is. After a busy pre-Christmas, it would be a great idea to find some way to remind yourself that this is the time of year to settle back to take stock of what has been and what is to come. And remember, this isn’t a period to run yourself ragged - so grab a hat, sing along to Xmas songs and make sure you join in the fun too!

However and wherever you are spending Christmas this year, we wish you and yours a wonderful festive season!

Happy travels!
