If you’re looking for a bit of adventure for your holiday this year, consider resting your head somewhere a little different to the standard fare. The Flexicover Team looks at some of the quirky and interesting options available to the inquisitive traveller!

There is a growing trend for boutique and stylish accommodation experiences and many travellers see their hotel as an opportunity to stay at a unique abode.

The Flexicover Team looks at some of the quirky and interesting options available to the inquisitive traveller!

Capsule Hotel; The Hague, Netherlands

Made out of oil rig survivor pods and floating in the harbour of The Hague (Den Haag), the legislative capital of the Netherlands, the Capsule Hotel is a great, unique residence. Built in 1972, these three capsules are almost unaltered except for the addition of a lock on the outside together with a chemical toilet! Sleeping up to 3, they are not super luxurious but certainly tick the box for super cool! Prices start from 60 euros a night.

Icehotel; Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

The Icehotel is the world’s first and largest hotel made entirely of ice. Located in the picturesque northern village of Jukkasjärvi and covering over 6,000 square metres, this hotel can accommodate around 100 guests, offers an ice bar and even has an ice church for unique weddings! Plus, no two visits are the same as the hotel melts away in the summer and is remade in a different style every year! So if you fancy sleeping on beds made from ice, enjoy great ice sculptures, want an ice tour, desire drinking from ice glasses and perhaps even glimpsing the Northern Lights, then this is a once in a lifetime and truly unforgettable experience!

New Hotel; Athens, Greece

A true labour of love, the New Hotel in the centre of Athens was reconstructed from the Olympic Palace Hotel by Greek Cypriot art collector Dakis Joannou. Made from everyday recycled materials including ladders, bark cloth and old newspapers, the Brazilian interior designers, Humberto and Fernando, have done a grand job with its construction. The vivid installations, sculptures, jagged mirrors, quirky objects, chairs and fixtures make guests feel as though they are virtually eating, sleeping and breathing a major art installation. If this is not a quirky experience, what is?

TuboHotel; Tepoztlán, Mexico

Consider a ‘drainpipe’ and you won’t think of a room with luxurious queen size beds draped in Egyptian cotton! But the twenty rooms at the TuboHotel in the central city of Tepoztlán are exactly that. It's also a great eco-friendly tourist spot as it’s built from recycled concrete pipes. The modules are stacked in a pyramid shape, each accessible via a set of stairs. To add to its charm, guests enjoy a panoramic view of the local mountain range, the Sierra del Tepozteco with a local temple being the supposed birthplace of the Mesoamerican feathered-serpent god, Quetzalcoatl and the World Heritage Site at Dominico de la Natividad on its doorstep! With prices starting from £20 a night, it’s too good an opportunity to miss! Just an hour from Mexico City, TuboHotel is an experience like no other!

Train Hotel; Tatamagouche, Canada

Located in the province of Nova Scotia, the century-old train station at Tatamagouche has been lovingly restored and has 7 carriages dating back from 1978 to 1911. These have been converted into deluxe accommodation within those vintage railway cars; this masterpiece of adaptation makes for a great bed and breakfast stay with a difference! With a museum, restaurant, café and gift shop all on site, free wi-fi available in rooms, en-suite bathrooms and 24/7 cable TV, who can miss a family stay here?
