Holidays for active families
Part of the joy of parenting is introducing kids to the world around them – and there’s no better way than through outdoorsy holidays. Though the UK offers many opportunities to get active, heading to areas overseas that specialise in particular pursuits, helps inspire a love of fresh air and fitness, while also being exposed to different cultures and customs.
From the waters of Portugal to the lakes of Germany, the Flexicover team has come up with five destinations perfect for both parents and their kids to head away to and get active together.
Surfing in Costa da Caparica, Portugal
For water-loving parents and their kids, Portugal is the perfect destination for a family surf holiday. For younger surfers, Costa da Caparica, 10 miles from Lisbon, is a favourite destination because of its long beach and easy waves. It’s known for its swells being consistent, so stick to the right patch and it’s a safe and fun experience. It helps that the area has other activities too: its protected landscape, gastronomy and cultural aspects make it an ideal all-round destination. Best of all, Portugal offers value for money – exactly what’s needed when saving for the family hols.
Cycling in Mecklenburg Lake Plains, Germany
Families who love to cycle together will enjoy the vistas of the Mecklenburg Lake Plains in northern Germany. Often referred to as ‘The Land of a Thousand Lakes’, the nature-filled area, located inside the Müritz National Park, comprises of more than 100 lakes, ponds, swamps, and streams. The area also has an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails, many of which are easy enough for summer cyclists and families. Bicycles are available to rent in the town of Waren, which is 90 minutes by train from Berlin. It’s also where you can join a cycling tour – perfect for parents who don’t want the responsibility of routing.
Walking in the Dolomites, Italy
The Dolomite Mountains in north-eastern Italy is often revered as one of the most beautiful mountain ranges on earth. While a popular destination for skiing in the winter, this area of the Italian Alps is also perfect for summer hiking and active families who love exploring the outdoors. With an extensive network of trails, plan your route around its many huts (rifugios) which offer welcome pitstops and provide visitors with hot meals, showers and beds. There are walking routes for little kids which boast short distances, good paths and play areas along the way. An excellent setting for families, a holiday here is the stuff memories are made of.
Kayaking in the Norwegian fjords
For adventurous families with older children, a summer holiday kayaking on the fjords of Norway is nothing short of spectacular. With pristine waters, snowcapped peaks and luscious forests, Norway is the perfect setting for exploring the outdoors by way of the sea. Beginning in Bergen, families can join a kayak tour group, with two or three-day trips proving the most popular. Alternatively, rent equipment and enjoy some self-guided adventures. Another option is the Helgeland coast in northern Norway: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a paddler’s paradise for island-hopping and sea life-spotting.
