Heralding the New Year!

Hopefully the past week has been one of joy and entertainment as friends and family shared in the Christmas festivities. With gifts given, dinners shared and carols sung, the Yuletide spirit should be flowing freely.

And with just days to go until the end of the holidays for most of us, many will be reflecting and making plans for the coming New Year. As ever, this is an opportunity to make a fresh start, do things differently and get yourself out of any ruts or bad habits that have crept in. A little time spent thinking about what you want to come can mean hitting the ground running in 2015!

Spring clean

Get rid of last year’s cobwebs and start your New Year with a fresh home. Clear away the last of the Christmas decorations (but don’t forget to organise them neatly for next year), declutter those drawers and cupboards, sweep the garage… give your home the treatment it deserves to make it bright and tidy once again. If you subscribe to the school of thought that your immediate environment is both a reflection of you and what you can achieve, then blitz that mess and start 2015 afresh!

New Year’s plan

Whilst many people adopt New Year resolutions, far too lofty goals, rushed choices and the after-effects of Christmas cheer can lead to rose-tinted intentions. Unrealistic and improbable, a lot are broken or simply left by the wayside before February comes around. But if you take your time to consider what you really want and need, you should be able to make some achievable plans for the coming year. And if you do this jointly with your partner or a loved one, shared goals can make it easier than persevering alone.

Book a holiday

Most of us have a travel wish list, so why not make 2015 the year to tick something off it? And if you don’t have one, perhaps it’s time to sit down and make one - planning can be half the fun! Take a bold step to book now and with a little bit of searching, you can find some amazing travel offers and special deals to make your dream a reality. Which then leaves you with the happy thought of something worthwhile and fun to look forward to later on in the year!

You may not need to join a gym but think about making time for more exercise and spending time on yourself, even if it’s just picking up a new hobby or trying a new class. A weekly salsa class, power walking for 20 minutes with a friend at lunchtime, picking up your weekend newspaper rather than having them delivered - making small changes to your routine can have significant cumulative benefits to both your mental and physical health, as you get the blood pumping and the endorphins flowing!

Stay positive

January can be a tough month and many people struggle to stay upbeat during the long, dark, rainy days. Maybe start your morning with some deep breathing exercises, great for calming you down and setting up the day ahead. Make plans for fun things to do and spend some quality time with friends. Or maybe just take some time to remember your strengths and the value you bring to the people around you. We all have something worthwhile in our lives to cherish - use that as your touchstone and welcome 2015 with a smile!
