Get away in October, the golden month

The weather will be turning and the nights will get longer soon but there's still time to grab a few days away before ‘Christmasmania’ sets in. October is a great time to get away for that special event, festival or opportunity to appreciate autumn at its best!

In fact travelling at this time of year can be a treat as the end of the harvest is celebrated in many countries, giving rise to abundant festivities.

The Flexicover Team have shortlisted a few destinations of note.

Italy for truffles

October is a fabulous month for Italian food festivals with food stalls and wine harvest celebrations all over the country. Truffles in particular are a top culinary item and attending a truffle fair is a must for any foodie. The Alba white truffle festival and market takes place in the Piedmont region during weekends from early October to mid-November and is worth visiting for the scent of fresh truffles alone! Known for the best white truffles (tartufo bianco) in the world and hosting the world's largest truffle auction, it's a vibrant, buzzing fair, packed with entertainment for everyone!

New Zealand for Milford Sound

October is a lovely month to visit the famous Fjordland National Park and Milford Sound in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island. Home to dolphins, sea lions, seals and penguins, the area is a world-renowned natural wonder. You can experience rainforests clinging to cliffs and jaw-dropping, cascading waterfalls, some as high as 1,000 metres! Take a cruise at Milford Sound, view the underwater observatory, kayak, dive and trek - it's simply breathtaking. It's no surprise that Rudyard Kipling described it as the ‘eighth wonder of the world.’

France for chestnuts

The village of Mourjou en Châtaigneraie in the Auvergne region of southern France comes alive in October during its autumnal harvest of chestnuts and apples. More than three tonnes of nuts and 6,000 litres of cider are consumed over these two days and the streets are jam-packed with celebrations! There's a great party atmosphere and stalls selling specialities from neighbouring regions spring up everywhere. Try pâté from the Ardèche or sumptuous baked goods from the Lot Valley, whilst street performers, musicians and entertainers keep the festivities pulsating!

New Mexico, USA for balloons

The Albuquerque International Balloon Festival is the largest hot air ballooning festival in the world and over 700 hot air balloons, flown by people of a multitude of nationalities, will take to the skies from 6th to 14th of October. Autumn in New Mexico is a real joy and the festival's brilliant colours make it a stunning place to be during this time. The balloon fiesta is a fun-filled 9 days for young and old alike with entertainment such as fireworks and balloon glows (the balloons light up like bulbs) for everyone - this really is an amazing experience with thousands of spectators!

Japan for foliage

October is a lovely month to visit Japan with its warm weather once the September typhoons have passed. Head to Hokkaido, Japan's second largest and most northerly island, for natural, unspoiled vistas! The viewing of colourful leaves (koyo) has been a popular activity for centuries here. If you really want to see autumnal foliage at some of its best, the mountains of the island's Daisetsuzan National Park is the perfect place as the colours are strikingly magnificent! It's a great place for spotting deer and brown bears and great for hikers to enjoy the outdoors too.
