Many of us get stuck at airports, either waiting for a departure or between connections, often in unfamiliar countries for hours at a time. Anxiety and boredom can run into frustration too.
The Flexicover Team looks at some bizarre but cool things you can do to pass your time and avoid restlessness at certain airports around the world!
Yoga; San Francisco, USA
San Francisco International Airport is the first one in the world to open a yoga studio. Just past the security checkpoint in Terminal 2, you can now spend time in a mirrored studio practising your downward dog asana and other yoga poses. It has no instructors and no televisions; it’s simply a quiet, 150 square foot room with a few chairs and yoga mats and open to all ticketed passengers. So if you’re feeling a little apprehensive before your trip, find your inner calm before flying.
Nap; Munich, Germany
At Munich Airport, there’s no need to try and sleep on an uncomfortable chair or catch up with your emails in the noisy terminal. Have a snooze in a Napcab cabin instead! With mood lighting as well as audio entertainment and an alarm clock, you can relax in the comfort of your own space. And you even have your own desk, TV screen and wi-fi hotspot, to enable you to relax, work or re-energise before you board that plane!
Get married; Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Why not have a totally unique wedding and say ‘I do’ at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol! If you’re looking for that venue with a difference and then disappear right away on your honeymoon, this could be for you. All ceremonies are official and conducted by a registrar from the Municipality of Haarlemmermeer Registry Office. You can choose from an aviation style ceremony to aviation days of yesteryear or have a full on wedding party on the plane! An experience you won’t forget in a hurry!
Being stuck at an airport doesn’t get better than this… At Singapore’s Changi Airport (Terminal 1) you can actually swim in the outdoor, Balinese-themed rooftop pool and have a drink at the full poolside bar! If that isn’t enough, you can even walk through cactus, sunflower and orchid gardens in the Butterfly Garden or visit the Aviation Gallery. Who knew airports could be so much fun? Just don’t get too distracted – you might miss your flight!
Guided tour; Zurich, Switzerland
You need never be bored at Zurich Airport. Rather than wandering aimlessly in the departure lounge, you can take a guided tour of the airport and see what really goes on behind the scenes. The tour will take you to the Airside Centre and the turntable for all departing passengers. You can also take a ride on the Skymetro Shuttle and tour a dock with its aircraft handling stands. Some of the tours also have live commentary and options for touring the flight operations by bus. What a novel way to make use of your time before boarding!
