Five things to do in Orlando for free

Five things to do in Orlando for free As far as holidays go, a trip to Orlando, Florida can add up. But while the biggest attractions have a price tag attached, you don’t have to factor in expensive activities all day every day, especially if you make use of all the free entertainment on offer in the Sunshine State.

Away from the theme parks, there’s plenty going on to entertain the thousands of tourists that visit every week. From major attractions to pleasant parks, there are amenities to make use of and atmospheres to soak up that don’t cost a dime.

For those planning an unforgettable trip over, here are just five of the free activities on offer that the Flexicover team recommend.

Disney Springs

Disney Springs

There’s every likelihood visitors to Orlando have planned a visit to Disney World. But even if not, there’s the chance to partake in some of its magic for free by visiting Disney Springs. Previously known as Downtown Disney, it’s a ticket-free corridor between its parks that hosts a rake of outdoor restaurants, shops and entertainment – all right by its lake. It’s also where you’ll find the Lego Imagination Center, where Lego fanatics will be able to indulge in their favourite pastime. There’s no entry fee, and unusually for Orlando, parking is free for the first three hours too.
Enjoy Florida’s greenery

Enjoy Florida’s greenery

The sizzling temperatures and sunny weather makes Florida the perfect environment for flora and fauna to flourish - that’s why its parks are among the best around. While some are there for public use, others are maintained and manicured to perfection, justifying their entrance fee. The good news is Harry P Leu Gardens waives the cost on the first Monday of every month. If you’re in Orlando then, step in to see the best of Floridian nature – it includes a butterfly garden, tropical steam garden, a house museum and palm gardens, whose shade comes in handy during the scorching summer months.
Enjoy a wine tour and tasting

Enjoy a wine tour and tasting

25 miles west of Orlando, Lakeridge Winery is self-described as Florida’s largest premium winemaker. Spread over 127 acres of Muscadine and Vinifera vines, the rolling hills and quietude is a welcome break from the lights and action of Orlando’s theme parks. Guests are warmly welcome in the winery – in fact they’re treated to a complimentary tour of the estate, followed by a tasting of its produce, which ranges from pink bubbly to a rich dessert wine. Check its website for special events too, as they often have live shows, food fairs and arts and crafts specials.
Admire Florida’s alligators

Admire Florida’s alligators

As well as its theme parks, Florida is known for its marsh land, which attracts its fair share of alligators – and alligator hunters. Visitors can pay to go out into the swamps to look for them in their natural habitat, but for those with less time, budget or inclination, Wild Florida Gator Park regularly offers free admission. On the outskirts of Orlando, on the edge of Cypress Lake, the park gives visitors the chance to see gators up close, as well as zebras, watusi, zedonk, deer, bobcats and sloths. Keep checking its website to find out if its admission fee is waived.
Soak up the atmosphere of the farmers’ market

Soak up the atmosphere of the farmers’ market

In the northwest of Florida, the Winter Park Farmers’ Market is a place to while away a day for not very much money. The location alone is intriguing: it takes place at the old train depot, which has been lovingly restored to become an attraction in its own right. Then every Saturday from 7am to 1pm, farmers from around the area congregate to sell their produce and plants, making for a buzz of activity. It’s free to enjoy the vibe – all that’s needed is a few dollars to enjoy a fresh breakfast or lunch.
So wherever your travel plans take you this year it’s good to know that Flexicover Travel Insurance is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
