Diamond visits and jubilant travels

In her 60 years’ rein Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has undertaken 261 official overseas visits to 116 different countries, making her the most-travelled monarch in history. Her record is hard to beat!

With the Diamond Jubilee just a week away, we wondered where we can travel that Her Majesty is unlikely to go.

For some fun and excitement, the Flexicover Team came up with an interesting range of destinations.

Gorillas in the mist – Rwanda

Sometimes known as "the land of a thousand hills” for its green undulating landscape, these hills and valleys are home to one third of Africa's bird species and several species of primates. The most famous of these, the majestic mountain gorillas, reside in the Parc National des Volcans – the setting for author Dian Fossey's research, made famous by the 1998 filmGorillas in the Mist. A trek to see the gorillas is a once-in-lifetime experience! This tiny country has come a long way from past developmental issues and tourism is now one of its fastest-growing economic resources.

Land of the pharaohs – Egypt

This land of sand is perhaps best known as the home of the ancient Egyptian civilization, full of temples, hieroglyphs, mummies and, of course, the pyramids. Whilst there are over 100 pyramids in the country, the most well known lies just west of Cairo. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one to remain largely intact. For the discerning traveller, it’s best to check out the Pyramids Sound and Light Show after dark (book in advance for the English version), followed by the real sighting of the majestic relics the day after!

Two wheeled adventure - Vietnam

There is an apparent obsession with two-wheeled transportation throughout Vietnam – it’s estimated that there are nearly 20 million motorcycles, a staggering amount for a population of 90 million (almost 1 bike for every 4 people)! So what better way to break away from the busy tourist area and the claustrophobic confines of an overcrowded tour bus than the purr of a motorcycle as the ultimate way to see, feel and experience this breathtaking country! Check out the stunning Halong Bay in northern Vietnam, which is sometimes mistaken as the picturesque location of Scaramanga's lair from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Hiking paradise – Bulgaria

Bulgaria could be considered a hiking paradise and the best time for it is in the summer. The largest mountain range in the country, the Rhodopes Mountains , located in the south near the border with Greece, is an endless "sea" of green hills which offers easy hiking. Just to the west theRila and Pirin Mountains , the two highest ranges in the country, offer a sterner challenge. There are also small villages dotted across the landscape where you can get to know the local culture and traditions. If hiking isn't your thing, soak up the sun on the Black Sea Coast which boasts swathes of stunning beaches and idyllic bays.

Uruguay - The Switzerland of South America

Uruguay used to be the continent’s best-kept secret, often called the ‘Switzerland of South America’ for its stable democracy and social benefits such as free education. Boasting picturesque beaches, rolling countryside, colonial old towns and atmospheric cities, Uruguay comes in a small but highly impressive package. One highly recommended thing to do is the Wine Experience in Punta del Este , with all-inclusive daily tours where you can choose to participate in a whole host of activities including horse riding, golf and hot air ballooning before enjoying some wine tasting!
