Carnivals that are a “Must-Attend” in 2015

Published: 23 January 2015

Carnival season is fast approaching and there are many celebrations around the world. Carnivals are, in essence, a celebration of life and there are some places that celebrate it so well! Often linked to Easter and Ash Wednesday the parties associated are both huge local and tourist attractions. Our own Notting Hill carnival boasts one of Europe’s largest street parties held over the August bank holiday in London. With street parades and a vast array of Afro-Caribbean food and drink choices this is a great way to celebrate to salsa and reggae music. A wonderful event enjoyed by all!

The Flexicover Team look at some great carnivals you may just want to join in on for 2015!

Carnival – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (13th – 18th February, 2015):

If you can only attend one carnival, it has to be the Rio de Janeiro Carnival 2015. Dubbed ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, this Brazilian carnival is a spectacular display of samba, music and fantastic costumes that will take your breath away. With over 5 million people attending from around the world to join in the fun, this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity

Carnivale di Venezia – Venice, Italy (31st January – 17th February, 2015):

This Venice carnival is all about masquerade! There are several public and private masked balls and parties across the city. Like most other years, the Gran Ballo delle Maschere is set to be the biggest event of the Venice carnival 2015 too. But remember, the city will be teeming with tourists and tricksters alike, so be sure to buy your travel insurance before you set off in case of any unfortunate circumstances.

Carnival – Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago ( 16th – 17th February, 2015):

Sway to calypso music and the rhythm of steel pan bands; the highlights of the Trinidad carnival. While the actual parades are limited to two days, the festivities of the Trinidad and Tobago carnival 2015 will start in the weeks leading up to those days. So, go early and join in the fun! A great experience and wonderful to combine with a holiday on this Caribbean island!

Mardi Gras – New Orleans, U.S.A. (6th – 17th February, 2015):

The Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans is legendary and visitors come from far and wide. One of the best experiences during the carnival is catching beads, doubloons, coconuts and other knick-knacks that are thrown out to the crowd from parade floats. Each parade is themed and the costumes can get quite outlandish, but it’s all in good fun and a great one to attend!

Carnival – Montevideo, Uruguay (23rd January – 10th March, 2015):

This is one of the longest carnivals in the world, so you have plenty of flexibility as you plan your Uruguay travel. The tablados or carnival shows are one of the best parts of the festival that lasts for almost 40 days and nights. The Llamadas parade on the 5th and 6th of February is another highlight that just shouldn’t be missed. If you are heading this way in February, don’t miss this one!
