Capture those iconic moments

Images of some places on Earth linger in your memories long after the trip is over and many choose to extend the moment by capturing it in a photograph.

The Flexicover Team focuses on some iconic places, a feast for the eyes and every budding photographer’s dream!

Taj Mahal, India

After Mughal emperor Shah Jahan’s favourite wife Mumtaz died, he built a marble monument in her memory, today recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. The Taj Mahal (meaning the Crown Palace), located in Agra near Delhi, is one of the most photographed buildings on earth - a symbol of the Emperor’s eternal love for his wife and a massive tourist attraction.

Tribal Statues, Easter Island

This Pacific island, at the southernmost point of the Polynesian triangle in one of the most remote inhabited regions in the world, is famed for moai, large stone statues carved from rock between 1250 and 1500 approximately. Most of these monolithic human figures still remain intact with many set on ahu (stone platforms) around the island. These stone figures with large heads about three-fifths the size of their body represent the unique culture of ancient Polynesian peoples, said to embody the tribes’ ancestors that were raised as gods, and are visited by numerous tourists each year!

Best picture: Taken at the Rano Raruku, the main quarry where most statues were carved.

The Great Pyramids, Egypt

The Great Pyramid of Giza, located a 15 minute drive away west of downtown Cairo, resembles a pile of literally thousands of giant stones neatly stacked with no joints. Along with the giant Sphinx (representing the riddling creature of legend) in the vicinity, they have been photographed a multitude of times. For the last 4,500 years these wonders have really been in a league of their own – see for yourself and savour the memories forever!

Best picture: Visit the evening light show – it has a great atmosphere and you will get some fabulous shots in a spectrum of colours.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

Popularised as one of the most remarkable architectural buildings from medieval Europe, the Torre di Pisa is possibly the most iconic tilted structure in the world. In 1987, it and the surrounding buildings were declared part of the Piazza del Duomo World Heritage Site. At 60 metres high, some 100 kilometres west of Florence, this quaint tower – a freestanding belltower – offers spectacular views from the top too, worthy of every one of its 300 steps!

Best picture: Demonstrate the power of perspective by stretching out your hand and make it look like you are stopping the structure from falling.

The Acropolis, Greece

The Acropolis (meaning upper city) is located on a high rocky outcrop above Athens and has been attracting visitors, tourists and photographers for years. This ancient citadel is the most important site of the city as well as a key symbol of Greek culture. The most famous building in the Athens acropolis is, obviously, the Parthenon – the grand temple erected in honour of the city’s patron goddess, Athena, and original home of the Elgin Marbles.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The Angkor Wat has become a symbol of Cambodia (even appearing on the country’s flag) and is the largest Hindu temple complex in the world. Built in the first half of the 12th century this temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is an architectural masterpiece. As one of the finest monuments in the world, it’s one of the most photographed iconic places around, attracting millions of pilgrims and tourists every year.
