Published: 16 July 2015
The Germans sure know how to celebrate. From art to culture to music to beer and food, you’ll be hard pressed not to find a festival or event that suits your taste and delights your senses. Berlin, the capital of the country and a major multi-cultural centre in Europe, boasts of some amazing festivals of its own. Here are some of the most important and fascinating festivals in Berlin that you should know about:
Berlin International Film Festival:
Known as the ‘Berlinale’ this is one of three of the most important film and media festivals in the world (the other two being Cannes and Venice). Held annually in February, it is renowned as the biggest public film festival on the planet, and absolutely everyone is welcome to buy tickets and attend various film screenings. The red carpet of the festival sees some of the biggest international stars and a variety of genres are given screen space, all competing for the prestigious Golden and Silver Bears, the festival’s awards. While you may have missed your chance to attend this Berlin event in 2015, you can always catch it in 2016 from the 11th to the 21st of February.
Carnival of Cultures:
Called the Karnival der Kulturen in German, the Carnival of Cultures is exactly as its name suggests, a mega carnival celebrating the wonderful cultural diversity of the city. It is one of Berlin’s biggest open-air events and has been held every year since 1966 for four days around the Pentecost weekend in Kreuzberg . More than 4,700 people from 80 countries participate in the carnival which features ethnic food and handicraft stalls, music events, parties and even children’s programmes. The main highlight of the carnival that you should catch when you travel in Berlin next year is the street procession on Pentecost Sunday, where you can see amazing costumes, brilliant make-up, fantastic masks and incredible performances.
Festival of Lights:
To truly enjoy the monuments and attractions in Berlin, you must visit the city during the Festival of Lights in 2015 to be held in October. The Berlin lights festival witnesses the illumination of all the main landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Victory Column, Fernsehtrum, TV Tower, Funktrum Radio Tower and many other buildings and squares. The dazzling lights provide quite a spell-binding spectacle and transform the city into a night-time wonderland. One of the best things to do in Berlin is to go on one of the available cycle, boat or bus tours and try and catch a glimpse of as much of the beautiful festival lighting and amazing light art as you can.
Whether you’d rather attend Berlin events in 2015 or wait for next year to attend the Berlinale and Carnival of Cultures, now that you know about the various fun festivals you can attend in the city, it’ll be that much easier to plan your trip to Germany.
