A month of sundaes!
In the United States, July is heralded as National Ice Cream Month. And unsurprisingly so, as the US leads the way in eating this delight with an average annual national consumption of 26 litres per head.
Flavour analysis reveals vanilla counts for 29% of all sales and chocolate comes in second at 9%. Homemade varieties are gaining in popularity, though, as consumers explore unique combinations such as an exotic and sweet curry ice cream with mango and pistachio or perhaps a creative brown bread and rum flavour.
If you’re looking for some quirky places to visit on your travels this year, the Flexicover Team look at some weird and wonderful summer treats for some flavours that go beyond the usual trifecta of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry!
More than Toilet; Shanghai, China
For a good dose of toilet humour, this themed café in Shanghai certainly has a unique charm! Seats are made from old-fashioned Western toilets, gold urinals hang from the walls with ice cream served in a squat bowl resembling the Royal flush! Originating in Taiwan, More than Toilet has been a winner throughout China with branches opening nationwide. With all sorts of flavours on offer, you can try ‘Close stool 1’ – soft-serve chocolate ice cream with raisins, malteasers, marshmallows, bananas and more – all served in a yellow toilet bowl. And to wash it down, try an iced pearl milk tea – served in a mini urinal of course!.
San Crispino; Rome, Italy
Established as one of Rome’s finest gelato spots, San Crispino has 2 locations, conveniently located near the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. It’s famed for using the finest ingredients for its delicious gelato, mixing the classic with a modern twist – its flavours change with the season. Try their signature honey-based ice cream or when visiting in summer, try lampone (raspberry) or susine (yellow plum). San Crispino believes in the purity of their product and considers that wafer cones interfere with true flavours, so only cups are allowed!
Eyescream and Friends; Barcelona, Spain
This is a brilliantly creative dessert experience where the server guides you through the process of crafting an edible monster. Pick a flavour, toppings and sauces and they’ll assemble it all before adding two cute candy ‘eyes’! The ‘eyescream’ is frozen in cylinders, then placed in a machine which shaves it. The end product is a silky smooth texture making for a delightful experience. With a range of sorbets available too, this fun concept is a ‘must try’ when visiting Barcelona!
The Fabulous Frozen Factory; San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico
Located in San Pedro Garza Carcia, a town on the outskirts of Monterrey, this place uses “cryogenic ways” to craft a unique ice cream experience. Set in a former warehouse and designed by interior designer Jakob Gomez, the customer is made to feel part of the preparation process. The factory uses liquid nitrogen to create ice cream in front of amazed customers and all the equipment for the creation is on show. Everything is deliciously made in seconds, on request, and then augmented with toppings and sauces making it a memorable experience for gelato lovers!
Heladeria Coromoto; Merida, Venezuela
This ice cream parlour in Merida is famously known for offering a Guinness World Record number of flavours. With almost 900 to choose from, from the delightful to the bizarre, this has to be an ice-cream lover’s paradise. Alongside standard flavours such as chocolate and Oreo, there are flashier ones such as Pepsi, shrimp, mushroom wine, tuna and vodka & lime! The store offers around 80 flavours at a time, so be adventurous and try something new. For a taste of history, the local favourite is avocado – one of the first flavours when the shop opened in 1980. Or if you are feeling particularly brave, try the house special - pabellon criollo – which combines flavours of a traditional Venezuelan meal of beef, rice, cheese, black beans and plantain!
