Where can you go in May and June?

May and June are wonderful months to travel in Europe. Rising temperatures, flowers and fields in bloom and thronged streets free from umbrellas do a good job of raising spirits.

For warm, reliable sunshine, you probably should head south to the Iberian coast or south-east to the islands of the Mediterranean. But most other continental destinations still afford a great chance of enjoying a sunny spring, wherever you go.

The Flexicover Team have selected a range of great destinations for your consideration.

Algarve, southern Portugal:

May and June are the months nature makes the Algarve glow, with beautiful sunshine, warm, balmy days and fauna springing to life. It’s also the time when locals and tourists alike start popping up on the beaches to begin soaking up the sun. Bliss!

Catalonia, north-eastern Spain:

Most visitors to this region head straight to Barcelona - Catalonia's provincial capital is often regarded as Spain's finest destination; you could easily lose a week in this cosmopolitan mix of beauty and energy. But if you'd like to see more of the region, start in Figueres, the birthplace of Salvador Dali, spend the morning at the Dali Museum and then grab lunch in Girona before heading to Barcelona for the fabulous nightlife.

Crete, south-eastern Mediterranean:

In May and June this Greek island is abundant with wild flowers. Fragrant wild herbs such as thyme, sage and rosemary add a wonderful aroma to the hillsides. Camomile, poppies, anemones, irises and many species of wild orchids grow all over the island making a walk in such rural splendour a truly heady experience to enjoy. For a burst of culture, visit the Minoan ruins at Knossos and see where Theseus was said to have slain the mighty Minotaur in the Labyrinth.

Cyprus, eastern Mediterranean:

Famed by legend, this island is dedicated to the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, who was supposedly born in the surrounding waters. Cyprus enjoys the greatest benefits of a Mediterranean island with plentiful sunshine throughout the year and a summer season that stretches from mid-May to mid-October. Along with the usual tourist attractions, Cyprus offers lush landscape, 3,000 year-old treasures and a fascinating mythology, so step back into history here!

Paris, northern France:

Spring and early summer are the least Parisian times in the City of Lights. So many residents leave town for vacations elsewhere that the influx of visitors turns the city into a seasonal Babel, with foreign languages heard just as frequently as French on the trains and in cafés. The pace slows and the festivities peak, making it a wonderful time to enjoy this evergreen city of fun, fashion and flair.

Provence, south-eastern France:

Provence comes into its full, festive stride in late spring when, along the coast in May, locals will wake up to an extraordinarily hot and sunny day. It will suddenly jump to 25°C, rather than hover around winter’s 15°C, and five months of summer will have arrived! This is the best time for hiking, biking, kayaking and camping from the Gorges du Verdon to the Camargue. Or perhaps enjoy the coast (and cuisine!) of the south from Marseilles to Nice, through Cannes, Cassis and Toulon.

Wherever and whenever you decide to travel, Flexicover Direct, the travel insurance specialist, is committed to providing the highest level of service to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.

If you are travelling soon, have a great trip!
