Ski and Snowboard Music Festivals
While festivals across the summer months allow revellers to congregate in fun-conducive weather (well some of the time), energetic après-ski weekenders are now proving a worthy competitor too.
Skiers and snowboarders have mastered the art of working hard by day and playing hard by night - so much so that their parties have bloomed into bona fide festivals, focusing on high-energy electro and hip-hop music.
In the last decade the choice has increased exponentially as festival organisers tap into a dormant market. So if you want to navigate this year's off piste entertainment as ably as the on piste excitement, here are the Flexicover team’s pick of ski and snowboard music extravaganzas to make you feel on top of the world.
2-4 December 2016
Breeze down ski-runs by day and rock out by night in this Austrian town. Wild, snow-capped scenery and over 200km of adrenaline-inducing pistes provide the perfect backdrop to the outdoor and indoor venues that house some of the best names in rock. A popular ski resort in its own right, Bergfestival is the perfect opportunity for festival-goers to combine a traditional skiing holiday with a celebration of all things guitar, with bands like Wolfmother, Matze Rossi and Jon Snodgrass set to electrify this year’s slopes.
Rise Festival, Les Deux Alps
10-17 December 2016
Revellers in search of exhilarating slopes and electrifying beats should descend on Les Deux Alps in December for this independent ski and snowboarding festival. Alongside some of the biggest names in dance and grime - the Mercury-nominated Kano and Seth Troxler are just some of the acts set to appear this year - it attracts a cool, eclectic crowd with its alternative alpine experiences. Festival-goers can snowshoe up a mountain, cook their own dinner in the wild or even zen out with some mountainside yoga. With mountain-top raves happening at 2,300m, it’s an unmissable start to the season.
Snowglobe, Lake Tahoe
29-31 December 2016
Crowned as California’s biggest New Years Eve event, Snowglobe sees thousands of electronic music lovers congregate in Bijou Park for its open-air revelry. On the eve itself, sounds boom through the crowd as fireworks explode overhead, while fans dance wildly to electro heavy-hitters in this psychedelic outdoor playground. Headliners this year include chart toppers the Chainsmokers, Aussie producer Flume, electronic dance music trio Major Lazer and Seattle electropop duo Odesza. It's proved so popular that this year's Snowglobe will double in size compared to 2015, creating more room for art installations, ski and skateboarding demos and of course, electro-fuelled dancing.
13-15 January 2017
Dance till you drop at Garosnow, an explosive electro festival that sees parties rage across the Pyrenees. With three major events from January until March, the fun begins in Les Angles, before moving to Cauterets, then going out with a bang in Gourette. This is one snow festival where cold isn’t a concern thanks to the festival's seriously high energy. As well as offering some of the best pistes in the Pyrenees, the event also draws a hip, cultural crowd thanks to its location between Barcelona, Montpellier and Toulouse. Renowned for high-quality underground electronic music, expect a highly curated line-up for this year's event.
3-8 April 2017
Whilst snowbombing sounds like you're going to jump into a snow drift (think cannonballing into a pool), for many après-ski enthusiasts it is the Glastonbury of ski resort festivals. The event has been running since 2000 and was first held in a pub in the French resort of Risoul. In 2005 it moved to the Tyrolean resort of Mayrhofen in Austria and evolved from its original DJ and electronic dance music roots to incorporate live acts to also appeal to indie/rock aficionados. So after a thrilling day on the slopes, your nights can consist of fantastic DJ shows, jacuzzi parties, indie and rock music performances and plenty more.
