September festivals

Combining a holiday with a festival is in vogue as it is an ideal way to experience a region’s culture, customs, music and culinary delights.

Such festivals, particularly those outdoors, can lead to the release of ‘happy hormones’ which relieve stress - walking to and from your tent is a great workout in itself. Relax and enjoy all the health benefits of just being in the fresh air, maybe with some added glitter and costumes too!

The Flexicover Team has some great options for you to consider!

International Oyster Festival; Ireland — 25-28th September

Held annually in Galway on the west coast of Ireland, this is the oldest Oyster festival in the world. Started in 1954, the annual festival marks the start of the oyster season and this food extravaganza draws in over 20,000 visitors. Events take place across the three days with the main attraction being the Guinness World Oyster Opening Championships as contenders see how many oysters they can eat in 3 minutes. Parades, gala balls, gourmet seafood, live music and a generous amount of Guinness makes this Festival a cracking place for a long weekend away!

Festival N°6; Wales — 5-7th September

This annual arts and music festival is held at Portmeirion on the Snowdonia coast, with a variety of music genres on offer including rock & roll, house, dance, techno and folk. Set in a unique location, Portmeiron has a beautiful backdrop with the ocean, mountains and forests all around enjoy not only music but comedy, literature talks and spoken word performances too. With something for everyone – this highly family friendly event (you can bring your own tent or sleep in one of the boutique yurts) is great fun and fully embodies its slogan, “Attitude is Everything”!

Mid-Autumn Festival; China — 6-8th September

Falling on the fifteenth day of the eighth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, this harvestide festival is the second largest in China. Generally known as the Moon Festival, it’s celebrated when the moon is at its brightest and roundest, close to the autumnal equinox. This is a public holiday in China and is a joyous time to visit when bright lanterns are hung everywhere and folks share delicious moon cakes. Spirits and passions run high during this time of thanksgiving, with cassia wine and fruit in abundance – miss out at your peril!

Atlantic Antic; USA — 28th September

This massive one-day street fair is held on Atlantic Avenue, a major thoroughfare in the New York borough of Brooklyn. It’s a day of great family fun, bringing together thousands of people to celebrate music, art, food and shopping. 2014 is the fair’s 40th anniversary and will no doubt be as throbbing as the previous ones! The mile of entertainments is a tribute to the myriad heritages that coexist in Brooklyn. There is something for everyone with trendy restaurants opening up, pop-up boutiques and live music performances. For children there is face painting and storytelling as well as pony rides. This is definitely one for you if you’re in NYC this autumn!

La Mercè; Spain — 24th September

This festa major (annual festival) is the largest festival in Barcelona, held in honour of Our Lady of Mercy, a Roman Catholic Feast day. This bright, colourful event has the city hosting around 600 events before the main day itself. Swimming races to concerts and traditional folk dances to parades of gegants (papier-maché giants) add to the festivities. Nimble teams of castellers compete to form the highest human pyramid, with towers often rising to eight storeys high! You can also visit Barcelona’s museums for free during this time and ensure you sample the local sparkling wine!

Wherever your travels take you this year and whichever festival you are lucky enough to visit we at Flexicover are committed to providing you the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away. Safe travels!
