Great apps for holiday snaps
Well before selfies and social media came along, sharing holiday snaps with our family and friends has always been an important part of the travel experience.
And while we don’t have to worry about getting our camera films developed at the pharmacy anymore, it’s now easier than ever, thanks to modern technology, not only to share them but to make scenes look even more alluring than they already are.
To make your travel moments even more Instagrammable, here are the Flexicover team's top five apps to ensure your uploaded pics are overexposed – but just in the good sense.
In an age where Instagram filters are so yesterday and Snapchat’s don’t do justice to serious photos, VSCO provides a solid alternative. As they’re not big on instructions, it needs some feeling about at first. But once you have the hang of it, it does wonders to otherwise-ordinary holiday snaps, altering aspects like tint, skin tone, clarity and sharpness. So if you wanted to turn that rustic Madridian door into a prize-winning pic, this is the app to help. You can peruse the photos of other VSCOers in their social network (similar to Instagram) but the best aspect of all is that it’s free!
Back before Instagram was a pixel in our eyes, Hipstamatic was the hipster’s go-to app to change digital pictures into retro works of art. It was so successful that it won Apple’s first app award (which was later given to Periscope, Duolingo and Action Movie FX), and has managed to stay relevant despite Instagram’s dominance. How so? Hipstamatic gives a broader range of pre-determined looks than Insta’s filters, from rusty orange to 70s analogue. Plus hipsters can manually adjust colour and light levels, giving a tone that’s as unique as the subject matter – if not the photographer!

For those interested enough in holiday photography to bring their camera along, Photocaddy is a companion app that helps you take high-standard pics. Call it a shortcut or call it cheating, it covers over 50 different scenes – from waterfalls to the moon to street performers – and suggests tips that will capture the situation, whether that involves guidance for settings or light position. As well as the app’s own instructions, users can add or read their own tips so you won’t be short of valuable advice at the crucial moment. So if you can’t afford to bring along a professional photographer to help you take the money shots, this is the next best option.

Probably our favourite app from this list, Sun Seeker is built for perfectionist holidaymakers who have an eye for the perfect shot, but not the right light. This smart app calls for the snapper to point their camera phone at the view they want to capture. Then, an augmented reality layer displays the sun’s daily path, shown at hourly intervals, along with the rise and set times. That means you can return to that same spot when there’s better conditions, making it a must for budding Anne Lebowitzes.

Vapp is a must for skiers who are stuck on the slope with awe-inducing vistas but no spare hands. Rather than spend precious skiing-time ungloving, capturing the moment while in serious danger of frostbite, re-gloving and completing your run, Vapp turns your camera into a voice-activated device you can customise beforehand. Simply record your trigger level in the warmth of your chalet and then get snap-happy while out on the slopes to return with a wealth of Insta-friendly photos. It also works for selfies, action sports and beach shots.
