Follow the September sun!

September marks the start of the new school year with the popular summer holiday destinations and airport lounges becoming less crowded. It’s also a great time to bag that bargain to get away for the last bit of sun before the chill of autumn sets in.

At this time of the year, the usual suspects (the Costa del Sol, Canary Islands and Egypt) will still offer temperatures in the mid 20s and over. As far as alternatives are concerned, whilst Southeast Asia and the Caribbean may spring to mind, they aren’t ideal due to it presently being their rainy and hurricane seasons.

The Flexicover Team recommends the following choices.

Sorrento, Italy

Teetering on the edge of a cliff that plunges into the sea, this enchanting town enjoys a superb location looking out over the Bay of Naples towards Mount Vesuvius. If you want to get out and about it is an ideal base to explore some of the best the area has to offer, whether you want to visit the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum or take a white-knuckle bus ride hugging the cliff along the world famous Amalfi Coast. Also the island of Capri, known as the isle of the entrancing sirens from Greek mythology, is just a short boat ride from Sorrento and is home to one of the "must-see" attractions - the breathtaking and surreal Grotta Azzurra, a 60m long and 25m wide cave with the most crystal blue waters imaginable!

Nesebar, Bulgaria

Nesebar is not only an ancient town; it is also one of the major seaside resorts on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Black Sea". The old town was established more than 3,200 years ago by the Thracians and features narrow cobblestone streets, well-preserved medieval churches and wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Situated on a small peninsula, it is connected to the new town by a narrow man-made isthmus. Soak up the sun on wide golden sands and in crystal clear waters of the Sunny Beach Resort, where the temperature this time of year is a very pleasant 26°C!

Nungwi, Zanzibar, Tanzania

September is a great time to visit Zanzibar! Being springtime it’s dry and warm, perfect conditions for sunseekers with temperatures hovering around 30°C. Nungwi is traditionally the centre of the archipelago's dhow-building industry but over the last decade, the white-sand coastline has become one of the island's busiest destinations. The sweeping cape is surrounded by sparkling, warm, turquoise seas and is perfect for engaging in the many aquatic activities available with kite surfing and diving extremely popular. If you’re looking for a more cultural experience, head down the coast to the 16th-century Arab ruins at Fukuchani and Mvuleni or experience the busy market at Mkokotoni.

Bali, Indonesia

Bali, the famed “Island of the Gods”, is relatively small and you could drive around this Hindu-majority island in a day. However, it’s one of the world's most popular destinations. Nature and culture lovers can have a great time exploring Bali's waterfalls, such as Gitgit and Blahmantung Falls and countless Hindu temples. In fact, villages are required by law to have at least three temples: a temple of origin (pura puseh) located at the kaja (“pure”) side of the village, a village temple (pura desa) at the centre for everyday use and a temple of the dead (pura dalem) at the kelod (“unclean”) end. Bali also offers a whole host of water sports including world-class surfing in its pulse-pounding surf and superb diving in the warm clear waters!

San Diego, California, USA

Though large, San Diego has a somewhat slower paced atmosphere - especially when compared to its northern neighbour, Los Angeles. With 70 miles of pristine coastline, year-round sunshine and mild temperatures you can enjoy the surf and sand almost any day of the year. So grab your beach towels, slather on the sunscreen, and explore some of the finest beaches the US has to offer! Additionally, like any major US city, there's a whole host of attractions and things to see and do. Animal lovers won't want to miss a visit to the world famous San Diego Zoo - possibly the premier zoo of North America - or catch the all-new Shamu show, One Ocean, at Sea World. And if you intend to visit a number of attractions get hold of the Go San Diego Card or Southern California CityPass!
