If you are looking for an exciting adventure that you will remember forever, Central America has to be the place. From turquoise waters to cloud forests, markets, coffee farms and the ruins of Spanish forts, this is a thrilling region to explore.
The Flexicover team look at some great destinations within this region that you will love!
Central Americas’ most diverse country just south of Mexico boasts landscapes that will take your breath away. Guatemala is loaded with natural, historical and cultural appeal and this is a popular stop for most travellers exploring this region. Trek through jungles and volcanoes, white water raft in raging waters, scuba dive or paraglide into volcanic craters or simply sit back and relax on a hammock. Spend time exploring the remnants of the old colonial civilizations and visit the exotic ruins of the Mayan civilizations. A compelling place with genuine hospitality so be sure to include this destination on your Central America itinerary.
El Salvador, although the smallest country in the region, is a tropical paradise with gorgeous national parks, pristine volcanic lakes and various colonial splendours. And for all the surfers out there, its Pacific coast is famous for majestic rolling waves in the coastal areas too. Natural beauty here is in abundance; from volcanoes to isolated beaches and coffee plantations, El Salvador has a rich cultural heritage and is a great stop for travellers to Central America. Beware though, crime can be high here so travel in groups, be vigilant and pay close attention to your personal safety.
Honduras is often known as the centre of trouble, but the exotic charm that thrives here still proves to be an appealing element to exploring travellers. With lush forests, rolling hills, a beautiful Caribbean coastline and waterfalls and rivers of the Pico National park all at hand, Honduras makes for a great visit. Bay Islands boast crystal clear waters and one of the finest coral reefs in the region, making this the main attraction in Honduras. Swim, dive, snorkel or relax, the choice is yours!
Nicaragua is one of the friendliest and safest countries to visit in Central America and as it is one of the least visited, it has preserved its authenticity and charm. With its colourful Spanish colonial cities, towering active volcanoes, pristine deserted beaches and crater lakes, it offers extraordinary landscapes. Do climb Volcán Concepción and you’ll look out over colonial Granada and hundreds of tiny tropical isletas (islets); breath-taking!
Whilst almost no ancient structures remain, there are some wonderful churches and museums to explore in the capital city Managua as well as other beautiful buildings. This is a great budget destination too with food and accommodation relatively cheap.
Wherever your travels take you this year and whichever destination(s) you are lucky enough to visit, remember to take your Flexicover travel insurance with you!
