5 ways to make your holiday to Istanbul unforgettable
Published: 09 February 2015
A popular travel writer once compared Istanbul to an onion, revealing a different aspect of delight with every layer you peel away through experience and exploration. Simply put, she stated, Istanbul was almost a country to itself and so multi-faceted.
Before visiting be sure to plan your trip; this will help you make the most of the time you have in this wonderful city.
The Flexicover team offer some tips on how to ensure you have the best experience!
Research, research, research!
Get your hands on a recent guide book and some latest travel brochures. These will be great for tips on where to go, what to do, what not to miss and great food places too! We recommend reading travel articles online and browsing forums too as these give a real insight into real life stories and experiences from people who have visited from around the world. Learn as much about the city as you can and look at some of the city maps available online so you can get a feel for the different areas and the location of your hotel or apartment. Before you go, it’s also wise to check the weather so you know exactly what to pack!
Create a destination checklist:
Once you’ve finished researching, create a list of all the things you would like to do, see and try. This will form part of your personalised Istanbul itinerary and will enable you to really make the most of your break. Having a list and agenda specific to you will ensure you maximise your time doing the things of most interest to you rather than following a guide book or a general schedule.
Get in touch with the locals:
Guide book and brochures are great but they’re usually designed for tourists and won’t allow you to really experience the authenticity of a place or to experience it how the locals do! Travel forums are a good way to connect online with locals or expats. Often you will even find some willing to recommend different places to see, eat and stay that are off the beaten path and a bit more authentic. Some may even be willing to give you their details should you need anything whilst you are visiting which is great if you are looking for a travel buddy!
Once you arrive, enjoy every moment. Ask advice from the hotel concierge and speak to locals if you get a chance. Stop for Turkish tea or coffee as the locals do in between your itinerary and soak up the wonderful vibe of this city. Make memories everywhere you go and capture them on camera so they are remembered for a life time. Be sure to have a steam bath ‘hammam’ in a traditional bath house too; great for relaxation and getting clean!
Invest in travel insurance:
After all the effort you spend booking and researching a trip, make sure you book your Flexicover travel insurance. Travel in the knowledge that in the unlikely event of something going wrong, Flexicover are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
