‘Tis the season to be jolly!
Christmas is a happy time, a time for celebration, a time to spend with family and friends, a time to indulge and to enjoy a well deserved break.
In spite of that it can also be a stressful time. The expense of buying presents, the pressure of last minute shopping and fulfilling the expectations of in-laws, friends and family. But with a little thought and a bit of preparation, there are happy ways around this.
The Flexicover Team suggests some tips to help get into the Christmas spirit and get the most from that happy/stressful balance.
Visit a Christmas market - there are lots all over the country and probably one right near your home too. They are great for last minute presents with little trinkets and handicrafts galore as well as often selling delicious food. Treat yourself to a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie and raise a toast to festive spirits!
Decorate your house for the joyous period! A Christmas tree, sparkling lights, baubles, wreaths and maybe even a Santa Claus will bring a festive atmosphere at home and be a great way to get you into the spirit. You don’t have to go overboard and stick a sleigh complete with reindeer on your roof to brighten up your environment – a little can go a long way!
Cook and bake
There are some wonderful seasonal recipes out there so fill your home with the scents and tastes of Christmas cooking! Cinnamon cookies, gingerbread men and mince pies; enjoy the delicious smells that will make your home seem that little bit cosier. Baking is a great way to keep the kids entertained over the holidays too. Let them eat lots and worry later!
‘Smile and the world smiles with you’ goes the saying. Wish people that you meet in casual environments a “Happy Christmas” and say it with a smile. Remember to share jokes and laugh out loud! After all, Christmas comes round but once a year!
Play Christmas music and sing along too. Watch Christmas movies - It's a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music, Home Alone or The Muppets’ Christmas Carol are always good choices. Read classic stories about the festive season such as The Little Match Girl, A Christmas Carol and A Child's Christmas in Wales. And when children care to listen, read them their favourites too.
Spare a thought for the less fortunate at this time of year and maybe volunteer to collect gifts for orphans, at a retirement centre cheering up the elderly or at a soup kitchen for the homeless. Spread the Christmas spirit with a spot of charity and help others share in your joy!
