Fancy a marathon break?
Endurance, competition, dedication, power, history and terrain – these are all key factors that contribute to a great marathon.
Why not combine a trip away this year to support one, be it as a participant or an observer! Join in the fun or cheer on the thousands of people that take part in races all over the world, either for worthwhile causes or just the sheer joy of running
You would be in good company – cyclist and triathlete Lance Armstrong and comedian Eddie Izzard are just two of the many notable people who have run marathons in aid of good causes. And the novelist Haruki Murakami has even written a book, “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running”, describing his passion for and participation in long-distance running.
|If you are taking part in any of the selected marathons described below this year, the Flexicover Team will be happy to donate £50 to a nominated, recognised charity for the first 100 participants that write to us at: email@example.com - You do not need to purchase our products to do so.
Boston Marathon - 18 April
The world’s oldest, the 115th Boston Marathon, will take place this month and usually attracts around a million spectators. The run is both beautiful and brutal. It starts in the rural New England town of Hopkinton, winding past the renowned Wellesley College, and finishes near the John Hancock Tower in Copley Square. Show your support and combine it with an unforgettable US trip!
Rio de Janeiro Marathon - 17 July
Run along one of the world’s most scenic race routes, the Rio marathon flanks Brazil’s amazing coastline, a true spectacle with the ocean to the left and mountains to the right! The course weaves through the city streets starting in Receiro and finishing in Flamengo, taking in well-known districts like Ipanema and Copacabana. This setting is perhaps the planet’s most sensuous – have a fabulous break in Rio, enjoy the samba atmosphere, an array of outstanding landmarks, and support the cause!
Berlin Marathon - 25 September
The Berlin one’s a biggie, with 40,000 participants, attracting top runners from all over the world. It’s also considered to be one of the fastest marathon courses, with six world records having been set since 1998. The run starts and finishes next to the impressive Brandenberg Gate and passes through famous (and infamous) districts of Berlin with well-known landmarks like the Parliament Building, the Russian Church and Potsdamer Platz included on the route. With an impressive 700,000 supporters last year, this is a great one to attend.
Dublin Marathon - 31 October
Renowned for being the ‘Friendly Marathon’, this will be its 31st year. Winding through the historic Georgian streets of Ireland’s capital city, 10,000 runners will start the race on Fitzwilliam Street, pass Trinity College (where Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift both studied), cross the River Liffey twice and finish at Merrion Square. Only an hour’s flight from the UK, there is no excuse to miss it or the famous Irish hospitality.
Athens Classic Marathon - 13 November
Enjoy a traditional Greek holiday and support the participants during its 29th year, commemorating the tale of Pheidippides, a foot soldier who supposedly ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens over 2,500 years ago to announce a Greek victory. Athens is a marvel of modern and ancient culture, well worth a visit at this time – go and enjoy the city and the race, set against a historic backdrop.
