Breakfasts of the world

Breakfast is often seen as the most important meal of the day, the meal that wakes you up and gives you the energy to kickstart your day. All over the world different nationalities and cultures embrace breakfasts in their own way. Whilst a “full English” may be common here in the UK, the contents of the morning platter varies greatly.

If you are travelling this year to somewhere new then be sure to sample some of the local delicacies. Whichever time zone you wake up in, try a new breakfast to fortify you for the day.

The Flexicover Team explore some interesting breakfasts that you might want to try!

USA

It’s no surprise that Americans can turn any conceivable dish into part of their breakfast: eggs every which way, sausages, bacon, corned beef, different varieties of bread, hash browns, pancakes drenched in flavoured syrups, muffins… even ice cream. But whilst they are often high in calorie count, they sure are tasty! If you are ever in the US, consider stretching your American breakfast treat into a brunch – for a fantastic experience! When visiting the ‘Big Apple’, have breakfast at Clinton St Baking Company – it’s renowned for serving the ‘Best Pancakes’ by New York Magazine!

France

Whilst le petit déjeuner (“small lunch”) as they call it in France isn’t a huge affair, their specialities of pain au chocolate, pain aux raisins, croissants and fresh baguettes with butter and jam with steamy continental coffee are a real treat! If you really want quality, visit Maison Kayser, an artisan boulanger (“bakery”) in Paris. Their extensive selection of breads and pastries are considered exceptional - definitely worth a visit!

Japan

A typical breakfast in Japan consists of steamed rice, miso soup with tofu, seaweed and chopped green onion, nori (dried seaweed), often commonly served with steamed fish or a raw egg. If sushi is your thing, then don’t miss a trip to Sushi Dai in Tokyo. Opening at 5am, this 13-seater restaurant serves the freshest and finest sushi you will taste. You may have to wait up to 3 hours for a seat though but rumour has it that it’s worth the wait!

Turkey

For breakfast with a beautiful view, Istanbul is your city. Try the terrace of the Mangerie Café on the Bosphorus for an unforgettable breakfast. Take your time as you devour olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, a lavish spread of bread and eggs, local honey and a hot cup of chai in several different flavours – simply a perfect start to the day! From this vantage point, you can relax and watch the world go by.

India

Breakfasts, and food in general, vary from region to region of India. In the south they tend to eat idli (hot rice cakes) and dosa (rice pancakes with thickened spicy soup), served with an assortment of pickles, chutneys and relishes made from mangos, chillies and coconut. In the north of India, breakfast mainly consists of breads like paratha, roti or (puffy, fried) puri served with vegetable curry and pickles. Masala chai (a sweet Indian tea with spices) is a particular local delicacy!
