World Cup South Africa!
Planning to go to South Africa to watch the World Cup Football this year? The next one is a long wait - 4 years!
With less than 31 days to go, the excitement is starting to build as the world's largest sporting event prepares to get underway.
Travel to Africa may come with elements of unfamiliarity. Here are some pointers if you are lucky enough to go:
1. First Aid Kit
Medical facilities in rural areas aren't the greatest - pack a medical or first aid kit just in case.
2. Diseases and Vaccinations
Dengue fever, HIV/AIDS, yellow fever, bird flue, malaria and putzi fly are all common in Africa. Typhoid and Hepatitis A & B are amongst the recommended vaccinations, check with your GP prior to your trip to confirm if you require any other jabs.
3. Mosquitoes and insects
Malaria is Africa's most widely spread disease. Mosquito and insect repellent will come in handy. Where there is no air conditioning in a room, always leave a fan on to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
Be sure to drink only bottled water as local water may be unsuitable. Also, beware of your ice consumption as it is usually made from tap water.
South Africa is notorious for crime; keep your cash, passport and travel documents in a safe place. Be vigilant and avoid secondary routes when travelling - tourists are easy targets!
6. Sizzling Summers
Summers can be very hot in South Africa, up to 30 degrees at times - wear light clothing and pack your shades, plenty of sunscreen and a hat!
7. Peace of mind
For your peace of mind, do remember to purchase the right travel insurance policy for your party as soon as you have booked your trip.
