Barcelona

Published: 22 January 2015

Barcelona is a wonderful city and one that can offer travellers an all-round holiday experience. With its Mediterranean coastline, beautiful buildings, rich culture, adventure sports, delectable cuisine and vibrant party scene, it has so much to offer and should certainly be high on your city break list this year!

Whilst it is easy to spend up to a week in this charming Catalonian capital, it also makes for a great weekend break too and with just a 2 hour flight from the UK, it really is an ideal escape.

Whilst it is easy to spend up to a week in this charming Catalonian capital, it also makes for a great weekend break too and with just a 2 hour flight from the UK, it really is an ideal escape.

To see all the main sights in one go, take a hop on hop off bus tour or if you prefer walking, explore the city yourself on foot. You will come across various examples of Gaudi’s work, the most famous being the Sagrada Familia Basilica, Park Güell (similar to an English garden city) and La Pedrera. Visit the iconic Camp Nou football stadium and stroll around the old city’s gothic centre.

Legends of the art world like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miró have all found inspiration in Barcelona and you can spot their masterpieces in museums across the city. But for a taste of local art and authentic Catalan culture, you should walk down La Rambla, one of Barcelona’s most famous streets. Stop by at the numerous cultural centres and theatres here or shop for souvenirs and gawk at pavement artists, mimes and living statues. Beware of your belongings here in case of pick-pockets!

Barcelona is often touted as one of the best beach cities in Europe so after a day of sight-seeing head to La Barceloneta for some relaxation. Attend beach parties, sunbathe (in summer time), play volleyball or simply take a stroll!

Food is an important part of the culture in Barcelona and the city has become renowned internationally for its gastronomic chefs. Restaurants, cafes and bars line the streets and with the city’s location on the Mediterranean coast, mean seafood and fresh vegetables are in abundance. Spend your evenings gorging on delicious tapas and drinking until the early hours.

So, whether you’re an architecture admirer, history enthusiast, art fanatic, beach lover, adventurous gourmand, party person or just a tourist who likes a bit of everything, then weekend breaks to Barcelona are the perfect escape.

Again, make sure your belongings are always in sight as thieves are known to target tourist areas and for ingenious ways to scam you. Make sure you have the right travel insurance that protects you. At Flexicover, we are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
