Fringing the medieval city walls of Cádiz, Santa Maria del Mar has an intimate, gorgeous beach of golden sand. The crumbling ramparts surrounding the city's old district also make for an interesting backdrop should you go for a relaxing stroll along the bay to drink in the beauty of the Mediterranean.
This tiny but dramatic beach lies at the end of a crystal-clear fjord that cuts through the rock and is almost completely enclosed by sheer white cliffs. Where else do you have to swim down a narrow channel and pass through a cave to reach the open ocean? Far from the madding crowds, its crystal waters change colour according to the weather and light and it is also considered likely that pirates used the location as a hiding place in the past.
Bois de la Chaize, Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Western France:
Step back in time on Noirmoutier Island which is located off the French Atlantic coast. Its whitewashed beach huts captivate with their old world charm and one can admire the elegant 19th century villas nestling serenely among the trees. This island has a Mediterranean feel and touts sunny beaches, bright green grass and blossoming trees. It’s also known as “black monastery” for the darkly clad monks who inhabited the island in the seventh century.
The Pelagie Islands near Sicily are a set of European hideaways full of coves and quiet corners. Just a hop away is Rabbit Island, a small fleck of sand flanked by white cliffs, perfect for a secluded retreat away from raucous crowds. This is the beach of "Rabbits" in Lampedusa, not just one of 10 most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean Sea, but also perhaps the whole world.
Cypriot beaches are often crowded but Lara Bay, on Cyprus' north-west coast, is a near-deserted sandy strip that is also home to the green turtle, one of the few such places in the Mediterranean. The beach sits on the Paphos side, approximately 8 km from Ayios Georgios and is accessible only by a 4x4 vehicle but worth the ride if you’re up for a little adventure!
