US hotels will not cost you top Dollar...

Travellers planning trips to New York this month can take advantage of a perfect pricing storm, as plummeting hotel room rates collide with the rapidly strengthening pound.

The Sunday Times reported that New York has been harder hit than most by the recession. The decline in both domestic and international visitors have sent hotel room rates through the floor and worried hoteliers have slashed rates to a six-year low to tempt tourists back.

Six months ago, the pound was worth just $1.43, a double room at the iconic Waldorf Astoria would have set you back £188 per night. Now, with the pound hitting a 2009 high of $1.64 and the Waldorf frantically discounting, the same room is just £123, a drop of 35%.

Other deals highlighted included the Hudson Hotel, off Central Park, with the price for double room on offer at £80, and at the Empire Hotel on West 63rd Street, where rooms listed at £205 per night are now available from £92.

Adding to this, price comparison site Travelsupermarket.com are offering return flights for as little as £266.70 to US destinations such as New York, travelling across 'the pond' is beginning to look like the summer's hottest bargain.

Whilst many of us will be tempted to capitalise on the bargain basement travel offer, it is vital to protect ourselves against the unexpected with travel insurance given the well publicised steep cost of medical care in the USA.

As a Flexicover Direct policy holder, you will receive protection 24 hours a day, every day of the year, safe in the knowledge that, should an emergency arise, you and your family will receive first class care and attention and return home quickly, if necessary.

Have a safe and pleasant trip!
