New sights with new flights

Despite recent issues and headline-grabbing stories, air travel remains our primary holiday transport and to cater to ever more consumers, airlines and holiday companies are on the lookout for new destinations to add to their rosters. And 2015 is no different, as airlines launch many new flight routes from the UK to destinations all around the world.

This year will also see the introduction of new ‘next generation’ aircraft, as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner go into service. And though the growth of budget longhaul and ‘economy minus’ programs is likely to continue, airlines are also listening to their customers by making more leg room and storage space available and offering better flight times on their itineraries.

The Flexicover Team looks at some great places opening up on new routes later this year.

1 Krakow, Poland (British Airways, May)

With its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, it is no surprise that Poland’s second largest city was one of the very first to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage centre. Visit Wawel Castle and Cathedral to take in the majestic monuments and cultural treasures, whilst enjoying timeless courtyards of this remarkable city steeped in history on the banks of the Vistula River. From the 1st of May, BA start direct flights from London Heathrow four times a week and a flight time of under 3hrs hours makes this a very convenient European getaway.

2 Philadelphia, USA (Delta Air Lines, April)

Often referred to as the ‘little sibling of NYC’, Philadelphia offers great urban lifestyle with its excellent food, music and art scene. This vibrant metropolis is proud of its history and boasts a number of historic monuments including the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Museum of Art. Those looking for bargains won’t be disappointed as there’s no sales tax on clothing and shoes here! Take in the sights as you stroll through its neighbourhoods before relaxing in one of its numerous cafes, restaurants and bars. Delta introduces an 8.5hr direct service from London Heathrow in April - a major coup for this excellent city.

3 Porto, Portugal (Easyjet, Summer 2015)

Portugal’s second largest city, Porto offers visitors a historic haven and a real treat for those holidaying here. This bright and colourful city celebrates touristic explorers with unique churches, imposing bell towers and old storefronts galore. An ancient port city, Porto is built along the hills overlooking the Douro River and houses an important array of cultural sights from the Coliseu do Porto concert hall to the Stock Exchange Palace and the academic festival of Queima das Fitas. This sweet destination will be available later this year from Easyjet, flying directly from Manchester, Bristol and Luton.

4 Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (Etihad Airways, June)

For sunshine and relaxation combined with luxury hotels, great attractions and tempting shopping, the capital of the UAE is a larger-than-life destination if you can afford it. Considered one of the richest cities in the world, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is seeking to diversify its economy by boosting its tourist credentials. Adventures in the sand dunes, pristine beaches and important cultural sites - such as the Al Maqqa Fort, Hili Archaeological Gardens and the Grand Mosque - are all proving attractive. Etihad starts direct services from Edinburgh in early June, bringing this desert treat to a new market.

5 Rhodes, Greece (Monarch Airlines, May)

The largest of the Dodecanese islands is a great place to escape to for a relaxing or action packed holiday. With an abundance of beaches, ancient history and vibrant nightlife, this offers fun for all the family. Formerly administered as the headquarters of the Knights of Saint John, you can visit the Palace of the Grand Master for one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. You can also kick back and indulge in great local delicacies like pitaroudia (chick pea fritters) and loukomathes (spiced honey dumplings). This ideal summer break is available from Monarch every Wednesday from May to September out of Gatwick or Manchester.

Wherever your travels take you and whichever holiday you are lucky enough to go on, we at Flexicover are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
