Hidden European gems for late Autumn travel
Published: 11 November 2014
With so many iconic buildings and monuments such as the Eifel Tower in France, the Colosseum in Italy, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace in the UK, it is no surprise that Europe is visited by so many from all over the world.
Apart from the most famous and spoken about cities, Europe has some wonderful hidden gems that are just perfect destinations to visit in Autumn:
Bologna of Italy
Whilst Italy has so many famous attractions such as the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Trevi Fountain, try visiting the city of Bologna; an ideal place for an Autumn holiday. Bologna is a melting pot of rich Italian history, art and vibrant culture all of which make it a great experience for visitors. It has Europe’s oldest university and some of Italy’s finest foods! Explore the city on foot and don’t forget to visit the wonderful Asinelli and Garisenda towers.
Maribor of Slovenia
If you are looking for an unusual place to sample some great wine, try Slovenia’s second largest city, Maribor. Whilst many visit Maribor for its world class skiing and top ski resorts, under the city’s streets, lies an exuberant 2 square kilometres of ancient wine cellars that house astonishing 400 year old wines amongst the rest. Add this location to your list of European destinations to visit, and sample the local Modra Kavcina wine at the Old Wine House.
Cologne of Germany
Whilst many people associate Germany to Berlin, its capital city, it’s the city of Cologne, Germany’s 4th largest, that we think will delight you just as much and make for a perfect Autumn break. Visit the wonderful Dom, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals here and explore the numerous museums and art scene the city has to offer. Chocolate lovers can’t leave this city without touring the iconic Imhoff – Stollwerck Chocolate Museum. This well hidden venture is named after its owner Franz Stollwerch, who introduced chocolate making in the early 1800’s. A great place for a long weekend this Autumn.
Folegandros of Greece
Visitors who are looking for a more secluded warmer destination as part of their peaceful Autumn holidays should try the gorgeous island of Folegandros near Santorini. Away from populated tourist hotspots, this island is warm and welcoming and boasts beautiful untouched beaches and luminous blue waters. Hóra, the capital town of the island boasts unadulterated style of architecture and white washed houses. Explore it’s cobbled streets and white houses with multi-coloured doors and windows. This is the perfect place for those wanting a relaxing Autumn break with some great photographs!
