Have an active summer


We’ve reached the halfway point of the year and many people are still unsure about where to go and what to do on their well-earned summer break. If the lethargy and the chill of the start of the year are still hanging over, perhaps it’s time to bring that (much delayed) spring in your step now.

The benefits of exercise are well-documented and most experts recommend we get a regular fix of it. But this isn’t always possible in the helter-skelter of our busy lives, so why not use your holiday to get the blood flowing and do something active and interesting in a great location? Most resorts will offer a selection of things to do, ranging from the solitary to the family-friendly. But if you have specific interests, you will certainly find a destination that caters for that specially.

1 Scuba diving in Sardinia

Diving in Sardinia is often described as the most exciting in the Mediterranean. With water temperatures between 19°C and 25°C from now until autumn, you’ll experience aquarium-like conditions with almost limitless visibility. Plus the area is suitable for divers of all abilities from novices to the most experienced. La Maddalena is a national park in the north-western corner of the island offering an abundance of marine life including morays, eagle rays, octopuses, large groupers, lobsters, scorpionfish and the odd but beautiful-looking nudibranchs. Once back on dry land, visit the little town of Palau to enjoy the ambience of relaxed bars and a wide array of informal restaurants.

2 Tai chi in Beijing

China is a breathtaking country steeped in history and, if you head for Beijing, you can visit some of the most renowned cultural landmarks including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the most famous wall in the world – the Great Wall of China. And what could be better than starting the day with the ancient Chinese martial art of tai chi chuan. You will be welcome to join the locals in a park – there’s one round every suburb, early morning and late evenings. Even if you’re a complete beginner you should be able to handle the basics. The form you are most likely to encounter is known as Beijing form, which consists of 24 unique movements that take around 8 minutes to complete. Feel your stress and tension simply drain away!

3 Surfing in Portugal

With its geographical position, exposed to the Atlantic, Portugal is blessed with some of the best swells in Europe. The Cortegaça region in northern Portugal offers a true surfing paradise with quality waves, great atmosphere - just perfect for those people looking to escape crowded conditions further south. The whole coast is teeming with hidden spots and you don't have to go far from the well-known and crowded southern beaches to find yourself alone with possibly even better waves. And after a day in the breaks what can be better than a pastel de nata, a truly delicious custard tartlet. Don’t worry, relax, you can burn off the calories the next morning!

4 Deep sea fishing in Florida

Florida is world famous for its beaches, theme parks and summer weather. Not to be forgotten, though, is its unparalleled fishing. Out on the open water the light appears softer and the air fresher, as you watch the dolphins play off the bow of your boat and stare back at land on the horizon. The warm, clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean are filled with a huge variety of game fish; your catch may include kingfish, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, swordfish, snapper, grouper, amberjack or even barracuda, offering you experiences that will stay with you a life-time.

5 Glacier walking in Norway

Okay, you're probably thinking "But it’s summer!" but believe it or not glacier walking is a summer activity, absolutely exhilarating, allowing you to experience some of the most fascinating landscapes on the planet. Nigardsbreen, an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier – the largest glacier on mainland Europe – is one of the most popular and probably the most easily accessible glacier around. Local tour companies offer a number of hikes with several difficulty levels to choose from, ranging from the very easy to the advanced. Just remember to take a wind and waterproof jacket, hiking boots, a woollen hat, gloves and sunglasses. Bring the hidden Edmund Hillary out of you!
