Going underground

Subterranean paintings dating back 39,900 years have recently been discovered, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, showing outlines of human hands and local animals, which makes this a significant find for scientists and an example of the amazing things that take place right below our feet.

There are plenty of unique experiences and activities to try if you look below the surface, even some in and around London such as dining on Mexican cuisine in the Old Vic Tunnels, Midnight Apothecary events in the Thames Tunnel or watching James Bond in the Aubin Cinema, Shoreditch.

The Flexicover Team team looks at some great underground activities and holidays for you to try!

1 Bounce below - Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales

Set in a disused Victorian slate mine over two chambers at varying levels, Bounce Below is the world’s first subterranean playground of its kind. Found in North Wales, it boasts huge bouncy nets to jump around in, springy walkways and a 60ft slide - all of which make it an unforgettable experience! The caves are lit with multi-coloured lights which show off the stark beauty of the site. Safety equipment is provided and you get to bounce around for an hour on this popular attraction - just make sure to book in advance!

2 Snorkel below - Riviera Maya, Mexico

Flowing beneath the Yucatan Peninsula, the three underground rivers of Xcaret Park provide a great family experience! Float or swim along 600m of freshwater streams which head to the ocean whilst drifting through ancient Mayan cenotes, over marine fossils and past historic rock formations. Breaks in the roof let in natural light and make the water shimmer turquoise. A stay at this eco-tourism park blends fun and natural wonder for an amazing holiday cocktail!

3 Sleep below - Sala, Sweden

If you fancy a really luxurious underground experience, then spend the night in the Sala Silvermine Mine Suite (around £370 per night). Here you’ll rest up 155m below ground, surrounded by winding galleries and serene caves. On arrival, you’ll receive a sumptuous refreshment basket and get given a guided tour of the level before being left to relax in your room. Breakfast is served down here before you ascend again the next morning. Unwind away from it all but remember to dress warm - it gets a bit chilly down there!

4 Float below - Waitomo, New Zealand

The experience of black water rafting is considered to be an adventure like no other! And the stunning underworld of Ruakuri Cave will ensure that you have a totally fantastic experience. Each expedition includes 6 to 12 people and you’ll have an expert guide who supports you as you weave and float through the glowworm-studded darkness and marvel at the beauty and adventure to be found down here!

5 Zoom below - Louisville, USA

One of the main attractions if you’re visiting Kentucky is the MegaCaves complex in Louisville. This is the world’s only fully underground zip line course occupying 17 miles of underground passageways beneath the city. With 6 zip lines to choose from, and two challenging bridges, thrill seekers will love this experience of a lifetime! Certified instructors lead tours and explain the heritage and geology of this amazing attraction. Be prepared for extreme fun!

As with most activities and experiences, particularly the more unusual and unique ones, make sure to check them with your insurance provider so that you have an appropriate level of cover when participating.

Wherever your travels take you this year and whichever wonderful activities you are able to experience, we at Flexicover Team are committed to providing you the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.

Safe travels!
