February revels!

Don’t let the cold weather put you off a February getaway; it’s a great month to travel and there are events happening all around the world that are well worth a visit. If your New Year’s resolution was to explore somewhere new this year and do something different, then these may be ideally suited!

In particular, carnivals are popular and there are many taking place just before Lent, so the party season didn’t have to end on Twelfth Night! They are opportunities for unique festivities and are jam-packed with plenty of attractions, processions and entertainment for everyone. If a mass jamboree isn’t quite your style then why not try a cultural festival or a special, romantic getaway for a more relaxing time.

The Flexicover Team pick out some great places to visit this February!

1 Venice Carnival (15th February – 4th March)

The Venice Carnival is one of Italy’s oldest and most internationally well-known festivals. The world’s largest masquerade is a real high point in Venice’s social calendar – an extravaganza of masks and fashion, with its roots in the 15th century. February is a great time to visit this fabulous city and take part in this annual affair. Walk around the Piazzo San Marco in fancy dress and be sure to have your Venetian mask at the ready! Watch acrobats, wrestlers and other colourful performers as the party takes over the city. Spend just a couple of days or go the full stretch – just make sure you have enough energy for it all!

2 Rio Carnival (28th February – 4th March)

Considered the largest carnival in the world, this festival, held before Lent each year, attracts around two million people to its streets each day. This 5 day celebration happens all over Brazil but in Rio it’s the most popular by far! If you want to attend an unforgettable street party, enjoy world-class entertainment and learn about Brazilian culture first hand, this would be the best place to start! Sing, dance and party away with over 300 bands and tick that box for doing something memorable in 2014. And don’t miss the main event - the ‘Samba Parade’ in the Sambodromo. You will be glad you went!

3 Tenerife Carnival (26th February – 9th March)

Attracting visitors from around the world, the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the capital of the largest of the Canary Islands, is an annual February extravaganza. It's flamboyant, colourful and full of energy – and make sure you are there for one of the main events, the election of the carnival queen - when all candidates parade in their glamorous costumes on stage! The ‘crowning’ is followed by a parade to announce the official start of the carnival. With a program of activities and events running throughout the festival, your only obligation is to join in!

4 St. Valentine’s Day (14th February)

St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on this date in many Western countries, is a very visible spectacle by people showing appreciation for their loved ones (most commonly their partner, though friends and family are sometimes included too). It’s honoured in many different ways by various cultures and if you want to take your loved one away for a short break this year, Rome may be your ideal choice. Spend a weekend here exploring this soaring city, loaded with history and romance. Italians are noted for their expressive nature so join in and whisper “ti amo” by the famous Trevi Fountain… you haven’t lived till you’ve ‘loved in Rome’!

5 64th Berlin Film Festival (6th – 16th February)

The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, is a leading public film festival and has been celebrated since 1951. Attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, Berlin is a great city and an amazing cultural hub for a multitude of artforms, from spoken word to street art, making it an experience second to none. Join in the fun with international stars, journalists, professionals, film buffs and tourists from all around the world to celebrate the heights of global film. Spread over 10 days, this festival showcases films of every genre, from major commercial productions to independent films. Film junkies, miss this festival at your peril!
