Escape to the sun this winter!
Middle of January. Cheer and merriment from the festive season seems a distant, if still pleasant, memory. The New Year has become jaded.
Add the fact that the next few weeks will probably be wet, windy, dark and cold (with the inevitable chance of snow). Now would be an ideal time to escape the gloom for sunnier climes!
The Flexicover Team offer some exciting and inspirational destinations to break the winter gloom!
Culture in Morocco
Name a Moroccan city and most people would say Marrakech, Casablanca or, at a stretch, Fez. But if you don’t want the ‘Indiana Jones-like’ hustle and bustle, ever thought of Rabat? Pirate stronghold, breakaway republic and now Morocco’s capital city, Rabat has worn many cloaks during its 700 year history, and there are some wonderful sites to see. None more so than the magnificent fortress of Oudaia Kasbah! From the lookout you will experience the spectacular panoramic view over the Atlantic Ocean, Bouregreg River, the capital and its twin city of Salé.
Weather: Unlike the summer months, where it can be a mercury-busting 40°C, the winter months are very pleasant with temperatures in the low to mid-20s.
Alternatives: Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Greece.
Longhaul to Thailand
With mouth-watering food, a tropical climate, fascinating culture and great beaches, it’s not hard to see why nearly a million Brits visit Thailand each year. It’s a great place to find some winter sun, as the 'cool season' which offers low humidity and clear skies, runs from November until the end of February. What’s more, from the mountains of Mae Hong Son to the islands of the Surat Thani province and the vibrant nightlife of Bangkok, Thailand offers something for every type of traveller!
Weather: Temperatures oscillate between the low 20s and low 30s with January to April experiencing excellent beach weather on the islands of Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao
Alternatives: Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore
Luxury in the Seychelles
Is there anywhere more luxurious than the honeymoon destination chosen by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? Don’t let the fear of high cost deter you; a holiday to the Seychelles needn’t cost a king’s ransom, there are plenty of ‘good value’ deals on the go at this time of the year. Made up of 115 islands scattered in the Indian Ocean, the biggest attraction is undoubtedly the beautiful white ribbon beaches making Seychelles the perfect exotic island escape! Once you have that golden suntan you may want to go ‘island hopping’, as no two islands are the same.
Weather: A constant warm and humid climate, averaging 29°C throughout the year,
Alternatives: Mauritius, Maldives, Sri Lanka
Sachertorte in Vienna, Austria
Looking at a map of the massive African continent, it’s easy to miss the tiny sliver that is the Gambia; it’s only 500km long and 50km wide after all. However with year-round sun, it’s becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination and is only 6 hours’ flight away! Step outside the resort, into the forested areas and you are sure to see baboons and various species of monkeys native to the area.
For a chance to encounter chimpanzees, visit the River Gambia National Park, home of the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Trust!
Weather: The Gambia enjoys virtually uninterrupted sunshine and high daytime temperatures (low to mid-30s) with almost no rainfall from November to June ,
Alternatives: Safari in Kenya, diving in the Red Sea
Madeira on a budget
The Portuguese island of Madeira is lapped by the waters of the Gulf Stream, meaning it’s warm and comfortable all year round. In addition to a pleasant climate there's so much to enjoy from the natural forest (the ‘Laurissilva’) to the coastline of majestic cliffs and natural rock pools. You can even head to Porto Santo for its miles of golden beaches. If you are in Funchal, don’t miss a ride on the Monte Toboggan, a 10 minute downhill adrenaline rush in a two-seater wicker sledge reaching speeds of 48 km/hour!
Weather: Only around 200 miles north of the Canary Islands, expect it to be dry with the temperature hovering around the mid-20s ,
Alternatives: Cyprus, Canary Islands
