EHIC - Are you covered?
Hundreds of thousands of Brits relying exclusively on European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) for medical protection in the EU, could be travelling with inadequate medical cover after over 3 million EHICs expired in the last few months alone.
EHIC holders are not notified when their cover runs out and most holders are consequently unaware of their expiration dates.
What EHIC covers
EHIC entitles all UK residents to medical treatment in an EU country. Some countries require patients to contribute towards their treatment and, even with an EHIC, you may be expected to pay a portion of your medical bill.
You are likely to be treated the same way as a citizen of that country - if they get free medical treatment, you do too; if they pay, you pay the same rates. As this is a reciprocal agreement across Europe, it also means EU citizens can use the NHS in the same way.
What EHIC doesn't cover
EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance and will not cover the following:
the cost of private healthcare services that are not part of the country's
healthcare system (e.g. dentists)
the cost of bringing you home (repatriation)
the cost of someone staying by your bedside when you are ill
medical costs outside EU member states
cancellation, personal baggage, passport, personal liability, personal accident and missed departure
24 hour English-speaking assistance service
Even if you don't have any plans to travel in the near future, it's always a good idea to get an EHIC - it's free and valid for up to five years. Go to www.nhs.uk/ehic
The best way to make sure you're covered if the worst happens is to have a travel insurance policy supplemented with a valid EHIC. With Flexicover Direct, you do not have to pay the policy excess on any medical claims if you use your EHIC abroad to reduce the cost of treatment.
