December travel

With the Christmas and New Year holidays just around the corner, it’s very tempting to catch a break just before the festivities commence. December can be a good time to travel to avoid crowds in some destinations or even just to make a short trip somewhere close to home for a short spell of calm.

If you do want to venture further afield and go away at this time, there’s plenty on offer such as sunny beach destinations in the Canaries, whale watching in California or skiing in the Alps!

The Flexicover Team look at some great December travel ideas.

1 Trekking - South Africa

For the most spectacular views over the coastal lowlands of KwaZulu Natal, head out to the Drakensberg for an amazing treat. This mountain range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where guided tours offer the chance to hike across pristine streams and high altitude wetlands, spending your evenings stargazing under clear skies. This is raw, untouched natural beauty at its best and an outdoor break just before the warmth of Christmas festivities would be a real tonic!

2 Christmas markets - Europe

If getting into the festive spirit early with gingerbread men, mulled wine, Christmas music and bustling merriment is your thing, then visiting a Christmas market should be top of your list. These seasonal markets are big all over Europe and most cities host at least one - the hard decision will be choosing where to go! Whilst the German and Austrian ones have a long history and tradition, wherever you go will have their own brand of fun and character!

3 Whale watching - California

Winter is possibly the best time to view sea life off the western seaboard of America, so if whale watching is on your to do list head on over this December! Peak season in San Diego is between mid-December and mid-March when more than 25,000 grey whales head away from the chilly Alaskan waters to the warmer waters of Baja, California. For a memorable marine experience, don’t forget your camera and go west for a pre-Christmas break!

4 River cruising - Kerala

Whilst Kerala has stunning beaches, it’s the cruising along the state’s backwaters that is an experience like no other. Spend a few nights on a private houseboat with your own retinue of staff to look after you and cook amazing dishes, fresh from the market. Experience a peaceful way of life by watching an amazing sunset from the comfort of your deckside armchair! Pass rustic, colonial villages on palm-fringed shores for a taste of serenity. And you may even be able to get your boatman to stop over at one of the villages for you to visit the region’s famous churches and temples, tea and spice plantations!

5 Relaxing - Cuba

The largest of the Caribbean islands, Cuba is a perfect destination for winter sun. With beautiful beaches and turquoise waters, coral reefs and impressive mountains, it makes for an ideal island escape. Boasting gorgeous Spanish colonial architecture, the island has long been a retreat for the stylish and has plenty to see and do. Visit the places that writer Ernest Hemingway was fond of, discover the limestone caves of Pinar del Rio, enjoy cocktails on the beach or learn to salsa dance - amazing for that blissful break ahead of 2015!

Wherever your travels take you this December and wherever you are fortunate enough to visit, we at Flexicover Team are committed to providing you the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.

Safe travels!
