However we go and whoever we go with, often the main reason for taking a holiday is the chance to relax. Holiday time is precious; a time to recharge our batteries. It’s the moment to get away and seek succour, in whatever form, anywhere but here.
The Flexicover Team look at some great options for an extended weekend or a longer break!
Spread across steep hillsides overlooking the River Tagus, the Portuguese capital is a wonderful place to visit and makes for a great long weekend or a week’s holiday. It continues to be a British favourite and last year was Europe’s leading City Break Destination at the World Travel Awards. With a great climate all year round, its beaches, rich culture and closeness to home (just 2 hours away) make Lisbon a popular choice and great value for money. Visit the World Heritage Belém Tower and walk around the small, intimate back streets of the city’s old quarter whilst enjoying the hustle and bustle of daily life. Watch the world go by as you sip on wine in tiny patio restaurants as fadistas (traditional singers) perform in the background.
One of southern Africa’s premier safari locales, Zimbabwe is famous for seeing game. Although not as mainstream as some other safari destinations, this could still be an appealing time to experience it without tourist crowds. The guides in Zimbabwe are known for their excellence (a tough 4 year certification process) and enable tourists to get much closer to the animals than elsewhere. Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in the country, located on the border with Botswana. Enjoy spotting buffalo, elephants, baboons, leopards, African wildcats, hippos, white rhinos and much more. Combine your trip with a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls and be sure to take your camera!
Crystal clear waters and secluded beaches with breathtaking scenery make Corfu a great option for your relaxing Mediterranean trip this year. It has a rich, multicultural heritage and historical monuments to explore. Visit the old and new fortresses, walk around Spianáda, the largest square in the Balkans, and take in the remarkable works of French architecture. Corfu Town (also known as Kerkyra) is a charming treat. Enjoy fresh food in its tavernas, from salads to mousakas to delicious wine. The island has fun for all the family and is just over 3 hours flight from London. Do as much or as little as you like; either way you’ll have a well-deserved break!
The variety of experiences on offer in Indonesia is staggering, making this Asian country (with its 17,000 islands) increasingly popular for tourists. The most popular island in Indonesia is Bali, which was recently named the best value long haul holiday destination. Well suited to backpackers, couples, honeymooners and families with children, Bali would be perfect for some extended time away this year. A trip here could have you exploring temples, taking morning yoga classes, cycling around rice paddy fields and white water rafting in Ubud before heading down to Seimnyak for a beach break and total relaxation. Plus Balinese food is sensational – don’t miss out on some satay or black rice pudding for dessert on your travels.
The Northern Norway region comprises the counties of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark and roughly 35% of the country, most of it above the Arctic Circle. During the Norwegian summer, this is truly ‘the land of the midnight sun’ as, for a couple of months the Sun is visible 24 hours a day. You’re able to enjoy the variety of sports and activities in the glorious outdoor expanses. Whether you kayak, fish, swim, camp, hike, cycle or even golf, there is plenty to make this trip a unique and special one. If you’re keen to see the fjords and craggy waterways, this is a great time to go!
Wherever you choose to relax and unwind on holiday this year, we at Flexicover are committed to providing you the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away. Safe travels!
