Actively seeking adrenaline

For many travellers with an adventurous streak, their holiday time is a chance to stretch their limits and senses. Whether you’re riding turbulent rapids, bungee jumping off a bridge or hurtling down a snow covered mountain, adventure sports and activities get pulses quickening and spirits soaring. It’s also a chance to get out into nature and explore this wonderful planet and its varied environments that give rise to all these active opportunities.

As the global reach of travel operators has grown, it’s unsurprising that the adventure tourism market has grown significantly as well over the last twenty years. Travellers and thrill-seekers alike are constantly looking for new ways to test themselves and to boldly go on new adventures.

The Flexicover Team showcases some of the top adventure activities and various destinations where you can enjoy the best adventure holidays.

1 Tandem Parachuting

Imagine the rush of adrenaline, excitement and fear as the moment approaches when you’re about to leap out of a plane which is thousands of feet above the earth. Tandem parachuting is undoubtedly one of the most accessibly thrilling adventure activities which often features highly on many peoples’ bucket lists. Tandem parachuting is a great way to try the activity as you’re accompanied by an instructor who will support and guide you through the experience and all the way back down to terra-firma. Good places to give this activity a go are those with clear skies and gorgeous scenery. So if you’ve always fancied giving it a go why not check out what options are available wherever you’re heading to next on your travels.

2 Sandboarding

Love the thought of snowboarding, but not a fan of the cold, well problem solved. Sandboarding offers all the thrills, spills and soft landings, but as the name suggests on the “yellow stuff” rather than the white. Of course there is the added bonus that while ski resorts are usually seasonal, dunes are normally available year-round. Some of the best spots for sandboarding with your friends include Peru, which has some of the world’s largest dunes, various places throughout the US and the Namib Desert in Namibia. If your budget is more suited to short haul trips, then you may want to try Hirschau (Germany). The resort is even equipped with a lift to take boarders to the top of the 120m run and it hosts the annual Sandboarding World Championships.

3 Surfing

As a physically dextrous activity, surfing may seem difficult but it’s one that everyone can enjoy in relative safety, so long as you don’t mind getting wet repeatedly. In fact there are many resorts that offer surfing adventure holidays for families. Plus you can enjoy numerous other water sports alongside it or just relax on a beach afterwards. Some of the best surfing destinations in the world include Oahu in Hawaii, Bali in Indonesia, Australia’s eastern coastline, Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and Cortegaça or the Algarve in Portugal.

4 Bungee Jumping

For a real and incredible adrenaline rush in an instant, leap into adventure with a bungee jump! Like Tandem Parachuting, the main challenge comes from letting yourself surrender to gravity so it does require some courage and the right attitude to enjoy it. With the right equipment, and expert support, you can bungee jump almost anywhere with enough height – off the sides of buildings, bridges, cliffs, waterfalls and more. Lots of major landmarks now offer the opportunity to feel the environment rush by such as the Macau Tower bungee jump in China and the gorgeous Victoria Falls bungee jump.

5 Skiing

Even if you’re not exactly a pro on the piste, learning to ski can be lots of fun. Most ski resorts will offer lessons for people of all experience levels and may have ‘bunny slopes’ available to practice in near-absolute safety before heading out on the slopes proper. With the bright, shining snow, crisp air and imposing grandeur all around, skiing definitely has a lot to attract daredevils and families alike. Some of the best ski adventure holiday destinations include Whistler in Canada, Zermatt in Switzerland and Meribel in France.

Remember that while adventure holidays are a lot of fun, they inherently carry some degree of risk, so make sure that you invest wisely in an adventure sports travel insurance policy that can cover your specific activities.

We at Flexicover are committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure that you are safe and secure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year when away.
